Hey /sg/ I thought you might be the best place to ask about this, so please bear with me.
I am currently reading up on where the Islamic State got their weapons, and I got curious about something. Most of the american arms are from Iraq or captured from American-backed militias, right?
Now as I recall there were instances where american backed rebels gave up their arms to the Al-nusra front or in some cases they outright joined them.
Now my question is; did it happen with Isis too? Did american-backed syrian rebels ever trade american weapons to Islamic State terrorists? Did some of them they join the islamis state? Or did it just happen in the case of the Al-nusra front?
If yes, could you source the answer for me?
Thank you guys!
Wtf stuid arabs lost our tenk??
REEEEEEEEEEEE
>>71366079
>Did american-backed syrian rebels ever trade american weapons to Islamic State terrorists? Did some of them they join the islamis state?
Of course not. All the American-backed rebel groups were fully vetted by the CIA. That means that were trustworthy guys and giving them weapons could never backfire in any way. I honestly can't believe you would even suggest such a ridiculous concept.
>>71366501
I'm not asking about the groups trained in yemen in secret.
I'm asking about the other, more public ones, trained by the pentagon, where only the leaders were vetted.

Because reaching Deir Ezzor was never realistic to begin with. It would take an enormous amount of resources to control 60+ km of highway that is sorrounded by ISIS on all sides.

It's crazy how we've advanced enough to be able to watch 2 groups fight a war without being in danger.

>>71366938
I know it happened. I remember reading about it, but I don't know where I read about it, and if it happened only with al-nusra front or with Isis too, and if it was a reliable news outlet or not.
I need a reliable source to show the facts on ISIS' weapons to an idiot I know who thinks things like that don't happen.
He also thinks russia is to blame for the migrant Crisis but that is another matter. I don't even know how to respond to that one.

>He also thinks russia is to blame for the migrant Crisis but that is another matter. I don't even know how to respond to that one.
Just find a source from before the russian intervention that talks about the migrant crisis. Then tell him the crisis was there way before Russia came.
>>71368155
I did. According to him Instead of bombing just Isis Putin the evil sonofabitch bombed everyone indiscriminately, including poor Anti-assad forces and childrens hospitals and civilians in an evil plan to make them leave syria and come to europe to put pressure on us. Also he thinks Putin also finances the far right and far right media here to create artificial tensions and destablize us because of the sanctions we are imposing on russia.
This is actually an opinion of a semi-educated hungarian liberal. I wish I was kidding.
>>71365333
They had to redeploy troops to stop the nusrat and moderate beheader's offensive. The druze beast will have to wait more time.
>>71368620

>le ebin liberals not even once.
>>71368672
Russia does allegedly fund some far right parties, but if those people think it's just Russia and not a reaction to leftist bullshit then they're sorely mistaken.
>>71368672
If Russian wanted civilians to get hurt, they wouldn't be going out of their way to de-mine areas that have been retaken from rebels.
>>71369241
I know.
A European parlamental delegate of Jobbik was caught in a scandal not that long ago, because he met russian lobbyists in brussels a buch of times. Also his wife is russian and he was educated in russia, so he really looks like a the stereotypical russian plant.
But as to the rise of the far right: Russia may funnel money to the far right, but it can't give the the far right the votes and support of the European people. The people supporting the far right is a sign that the political mainstream is doing something wrong.
You don't see that in hungary, Orban's Fidesz has a lot of support here because he isn't a cuck like most of the western politicans. Same with Poland and the rest of the V4, thank god.
>>71366079
All of those things happened, but you won't find it in the mainstream media. They always cover the asses of the rebels. I remember several sources that mentioned that ISIS bought weapons mainly from the FSA, but right now I only found RT.
>The IS fighters told me: “we need them! We get almost all our ammunition from the FSA, and we also get weapons from FSA, and we get weapons from Kurds, and we hope that you will send a lot of weapons to the Kurds because we can, in the end, buy them on the market.”
Also check this, they turned a blind eye or indirectly supported ISIS in this cases:

>Same with Poland
Our government is only decent in one regard: when it comes to fighting leftist bs inside the country.
They won't however deny refugees (claiming the previous govt promised) and won't openly oppose EU in most cases.
They're also hugely, cripplingly incompetent in every regard, form economy to diplomacy.
They're a fucking bootleg taiwanese version of Fidesz.
I'm glad a more right wing nationalistic party won this time, but these people are 100% pure retards.
No homo but Assad's son is a qt
>>71370445
It takes time to grow less retarded while in government.
Our governing party won in 2010 because the socialist government almost bankrupted the State. Fidesz "fixed" the problem by nationalizing private pensions again, and spent the money on appeasing our creditors. Later they did some reforms that helped with economic growth, and now we are doing much better, but we have the unsustainable state pension problem to look forward to again.
Still, even with a lot of retarded policies the last six years of Fidesz was a welcome improvement to eight years of socialist rampage.
Still, the socialist party would let the fugees in

>>71371144

>>71366146

>>71371615
Some poles here praised them profusely. I don't know too much about them desu.
Only thing I know for sure is they aren't that popular with the EU at the moment. I assumed it was the same baseless EU bullying we got when Fidesz changed our constitution and media laws.
They also suspended the refugee import indefinatly because of brussels. That was something I found politically sound.

Basically, they got into power via promising giant gibmedats. Some of them are now in effect, and will cost us ~4bil euro in the first year, and more in the next years. That's with a budget of ~87bil euro and ~13bil deficit.
Next ones, if they ever pass, will crash our economy with no survivors. Budget for this year is wobbly as shit because they will have to appease the miners, and that'll cost us again an arm and a leg. Next year will be awful. We managed to have a one-time injection of like 3bil euro this year, and all of it goes to gibmedats.
Their brilliant idea to stop the banks from earning unfair amounts of dosh was to tax them on all of their capital, which already caused layoffs and increased tariffs. I actually have to pay for my credit card now. They claimed that the only state-owned bank won't do it so there'll be competition, but then that bank was the first to raise the margins, causing severe butthurt.
Next on is a tax on trade. Aimed at supermarkets, but unfortunately they can easily dodge it, and every and all attempt so far at creating a law that will make them unable to dodge it created a monster that also hits small retail. That bill, like the banking bill, has a note that the shops aren't allowed to move this tax to their customers, which they of course will because how the fuck are you going to decide why they raised prices or fucked their suppliers over. This also includes higher tax on sunday, for reasons unknown.
Our diplomacy is in shambles, high ranking generals left the army because our current defense minister alleged he'll fire them, and the brilliant plan to stop Russia from attacking us is guerilla style units. Which aren't allowed to train with real weapons inna woods. They got a truck (one) though from the army.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

>>71379108
Pierre Sprey is the guy who is pushing for an overhaul of US military doctrine (same guy who shills for the A-10 and anti-F35, etc etc), and in his new doctrine, the M48 may well perform better than the expensive M1.
>>71379314
The thing is penetrated by M72 LAWs, it's fucking ridiculous to claim that the M48 could outperform the M1A2.

>>71379395
Depends on the doctrine.
I don't really know what the Sprey guy was pushing for, but if he's after a doctrine similar to WW2 tank army concentration, then pretty much only the m48 can fill that role.
As I said - it depends.
>>71379308

In what kind of ridiculous joke of a doctrine would the M48 Patton be superior to M1A2s in modern doctrine? The Patton is so ridiculously weak it can be destroyed by decades old squad-level AT weaponry.
>>71379683
That's right. We all know that the P-38 was the real deal.
>>71379629
but it's kinda true in some of the points, like in the manufacturing costs. Obviusly old technology it's cheaper and easier to makethan newer
>>71379699

>>71379883
Actually if you tell me this I could accept it. For some reason the pilots loved the p-38, but I never liked heavy fighters
>>71379881

>>71379946
Reveal how it is false.
WE HAVE BASED 2000 M48
>>71380032

>>71380080
I think the real point people are missing is the cost effectiveness, Turkey can field far more m48s than they could m1s
>>71380235
Yep,see iraq losers
>>71380032
And destroyed by weaponry tens of thousands times cheaper than it. The tank can easily be frontally penetrated by the lightest of AT launchers. It's not an MBT of any value.
>>71380067
All of Pierre Sprey's arguments are based on extreme cherry-picking. For example, he claims that the Patton is better than the Abrams because both were deployed during the Gulf War and neither tank took any major casualties, so they must be equally effective, but the Patton is better because it is cheaper.
The problem is that the reason the Patton didn't take any causalities (or at least not any major ones) was because Abrams were always there to protect them. The Patton was operated by the Marines at the time because they're the lowest funded branch by far (seriously, the Coast Guard gets more money than them) so they inevitably use the oldest vehicles.
>>71380067
Tiger's best ammo was tungsten and it's armor was cast metal with no angling whatsoever.
the Abrams has ERA+composite armor, and HEAT + KE ammo for the 120mm cannon.
>>71380560
Even a m-72 can penetrate it from the side (i'm not sure how the angle of the frontal armor could affect the rocket)
>>71380560
Depends on the doctrine. Look, you'll have t ask the old Codger himself what the hell he's thinking about. Why the fuck are you cunts trying to hound me into defending the m48 when I don't care about it to begin with?
could an M48 even penetrate an M1A2 frontally?
>>71380739
but he was talking about the sherman, not the abrams
LOOK AT THIS BEAUTY
>>71380770
The M72 original has ~250mm of RHA penetration. The Patton has 220mm equivalent protection in front.
>>71380820
Because you claimed a change in doctrine could make the Patton an efficient MBT, whilst it's a shitty outdated tank, not even fit for IFV duty.
>>71380770
t55 can penetrate it from the side
t72 is overkill
>>71380961
Who are you to say? We don't even know what the old man has in mind when he suggested that m48 > m1.
>>71381123
Because it's an MBT with the armor equivalent of an IFV. It's a massive deathtrap unfit for the modern battlefield.
>>71380820
The problem is that there is no doctrine where the M48 is going to beat the M1A2 Abrams..........or any other modern MBT. Even older Russian tanks like the T-72 would be considered far superior.
>>71380926
Tiger and the Sherman had the same types of armor and very similar ammo. the Patton and the Abrams do not. that was my point.
A Sherman could at least engage the Tiger, I'm not sure a Patton could even critically damage an Abrams
>>71381143
And what argument of mine were you trying to address with that?

some cool footage of LNA forces raiding the Benghazi university. ISIL forces are known to operate in the area and there seems to be a truce between the two governments in the midst of Franco-German led negotiations, so it would be best to assume that it is an anti-ISIL operation. However with all the militias with differing alliances/sides in the area, its not safe to assume that is 100% the case.

The SAA and allies are in one hell of a mess in Latakia mountains and the Ghab plains. Some villages and hills have been captured, a suicide BMP exploded a bridge in the Ghab plains, tanks have been captured by the Rebels, some SAA soldiers seem to also been captured and one Colonel, named Hassan Ramadan Maihoub , died.
This all happening right before that the SAA could have a chance to launch their new offensive in the region.

This is the same thing you could say for the M4 / Tiger.
The point is, to get to the soft side armors.
>>71381921
It's supposed to be an MBT, but it can't even take part in a battle without being destroyed.
>>71381952
What is considered a passing grade in Chile? In the US anything above 80% is a B. Anything about 90% is an A. Anything lower than 80% is considered shit.

>>71382277
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_equipment_of_the_Turkish_Land_Forces
>>71382161
Well, FSA/Nusra received more weapons from the US/Saudi Arabia/Turkey but they lack of manpower still there, this is a desperate move to lure SAA to their territories and keep ISIS alive for more time.
SAA win in Latakia today and in Al-Ghab they can reverse the militants gains, after all, FSA/Nusra are stupid for deploying more manpower to the not-important fronts and for worse, breaking the ceasefire.
>>71382394
Are you imagining MBT's are some sort of invulnerable fortress or something? In the modern insurgent battlefield, MBTs are just a bit more than turreted assault guns with crosshairs on their engines, tops and sides for RPGs...

>>71382591
>Are you imagining MBT's are some sort of invulnerable fortress or something?
That is what a modern MBT essentially is to ordinay infantry. With proper ERA and APS, the only way for infantry to reliably take down an MBT is with a top-down attack missile launcher.
>In the modern insurgent battlefield
Which doesn't matter for shit when discussing modern militaries. COIN is just pointless shit that never succeeds due to people wanting to "win their hearts and minds", when in reality they should be killing 10 of them for every one of us.
>>71382481
>>71382829

It seems the m48a5 is equipped with this gun
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Ordnance_L7#Ammunition
Though we don't have any numbers ( for obvious reasons), I think it's reasonable to think that it can penetrate the side armor of an M1.
>>71382967
maybe from the bottom.
But in a word where ERA, composite armor and advanced Kinetic energy rounds exist, there is no way in hell Pattons could ever replace an Abrams
>>71383289
So they replaced the original 90mm then. Okay. It's not quite as hilarious now. I was imagining the 90mm as being the gun in question.

What is the meaning of this?!
In any case, doesn't it strike you as weird that we're here arguing about the M1 fighting an M48?
I mean, they're pretty much used by the same militaries allied with one another, so the chances of that are pretty much non-existent.
They do have a prey, you know? Ragheads Jihadis. Old, rusting, badly taken care of T-55/64/72s.
I think that's a more reasonable line of argument since they're the ones who are most likely to face the M1/M48 any time soon, unlike the Finn who is still dreaming of retaking Karelia.
>>71383515

WAIT, WHAT
>>71383511
But an IED will work, is cheap, and can be assembled in a pinch. Just pack a steel container with high explosive, seal up the top with a copper bowl and detonate with a cell phone or RC car control.
It is like a $100 solution that allows infantry to defeat any MBT.
