Dwarf Fortress is still the definitive survival citybuilder because there is so much precision in the building and enough features to make pretty much all environments livable. It's hard to recommend anything else because they universally have fewer features and controls and I find them boring. Gnomoria was alright for a while but I haven't tried it since the early versions.
The controls are a bit rough because there's too many fucking buttons but you get used to it, especially if you are used to early PC games. Almost all of the ones that came out recently were just aping DF and did not innovate in any conceivable way, usually copying the exact same features until running out of steaming, so they were just shitty clones of the same game.
Gaming is in a rut right now and most games coming out are really not great.
