Once that comes out we can push the narrative and convert Bernouts to board the Trump Train. Say you had Cruz and Hillary running, but Trump also ran as an independent. Independents don't win, so Trump wont win. In a preferential election, Cruz would win because Cruz would be Trump's second vote. In our current system, Hillary wins because Trump and Cruz split the vote.
A big problem is that because second and third choices win, everyone tries to meet in the center. In the US, its not great but you will at least relate to one party if you are at any side of the spectrum and there are usually candidates that are more/less conservative/liberal (unless your a Democrat and then they are all fucking nuts). Also, it can punish candidates whom voter are more enthusiastic as it doesn't weight the choices in any way. Someone can win even without him being everyone's first choice. It punishes popular candidates for so-so candidates.
Sudo smart people love it because it makes it seem like its OK to vote for a smaller part, but the same shit happens regardless and everone just moves more and more to the center to appeal to everyone. It's a worse system

Which is why I said its the same in reverse. The other candidate wins. The winner is the candidate the population is alright with, rather than the one they like. The issue is the system isn't weighted, so even if you were more often someone's top picks, you can still lose. It also doesn't consider the second pick for first or second candidate.
The whole point of the preferential system is so third party candidates aren't worthless. They do that, but only in a sense they screw everything up. Their second and third votes are weighted more than the second and third votes for the majority party. The system is all kinds of fucked, but at least small insignificant parties who will never win anyway matter by ruining the election and stealing it from candidates who the majority of the population prefers.
BTW, Trump would never win in a preferential system. He would be the majority first choice, but because he's polarizing, third party supporters would screw him.

If everyone is in the middle, there are no real differences between candidates. Everyone will play ONLY in the middle, which could lead to poor decisions if the middle isn't best for the nation. Our system works because candidate can be across the spectrum within the party. Trump is less conservative than, say, Cruz or Carson. Democrats ruin this because they are all the same.
