San Andreas already DOES split the state. Pt Reyes north of San Francisco used to be next to Long Beach.
The fault has jumped east several times. Most recently this was due to the northward growth of the East Pacific Rise, which created the Gulf of California and actually extends up to Indyo except it's been filled in with silt from the Colorado.
(Silt which is rapidly going away now because the river barely flows to the ocean anymore)
The guess is that the fault will eventually jump to the Eastern escarpment of the Sierra, and all the land west will begin slowly moving north and west, not breaking off to go to Hawaii but ending up turned 90 degrees heading out into the ocean at the Mendo Triple Junction.
This would take several thousand years at least, and would not result in massive quakes and continent-destroying disasters. It would be gradual and feature increased activity and slowly growing faults.

The really scary thing is that there are identifiable metrics that tell us we are due for another major caldera eruption. Modern Humans have never experienced an eruption of that magnitude so we really don't have a visual image of what it might look like or how it might impact modern civilization. The biggest eruption we've seen in recent history was the Tambora (sp?) eruption a couple of centuries ago and that produced a phenomenon called "The Year Without a Summer" in which global temperatures dropped significantly for a period of time due to all the ejected material in the atmosphere. To put that into perspective against a major caldera eruption, it doesn't even compare. We could see civilization as we know it collapse, the world would literally change overnight, simply because our species is not prepared to handle such an event, even less prepared then we were before because we have lost some of the basic survival skills needed to deal with the collapse of civilization.
That's why this is all so fucking scary. If the earth is destabilizing in any way, this is just the beginning and we will probably see major earthquakes and possibly a major volcanic eruption somewhere in the world.

The great feature is the archive. You can have it look up all the quakes they have data on (about back to 1950) within specific locations on a map, then download it as a Google Earth animation. The recent activity is unusual and it could be pointing towards some kind of geological destabilization, or it could just be a random period of increased activity. Who knows? The point is, these things have happened before and will happen again, and we should hope that we do not see a Caldera Forming Eruption in our lifetime, because we are not equipped to deal with the fallout of such an event.

NASA has been in contact with a handful of solar-viewing spacecraft nearly all day now. Usually these spacecraft check in for a few minutes ever day to send down all the information they've collected, now they seem to be getting live feed from it.

Just upped their odds of damage from the coming solar storm from 0% to 15% chance of radio blackout and 5% of electrical grid shenanigans.
