Any other tectonically disadvantaged anons out there getting comfy next to your pile of bug-in supplies?
I live in Western Washington state, so I'm basically prepped for the impending Cascadia fault rupture.
I live on a big ass hill 250 ft above sea level, so the projected tsunami won't affect my house. Everything west of the I-5 corridor is expected to be destroyed and I can see I-5 from my window. A lot of my city, including where I work is only 12 ft above sea level and we're right on the Puget Sound.

Basically shitloads of SJWs, Hipsters, Communists, Anarchists etc. will die around me, and I'll be eating my dehydrated emergency food and shitposting on /pol/.

Post your gear

> California authorities admit major dams would not withstand a Cascadia quake or even a moderate rupture further south

http://www.kcra.com/news/4-norcal-faults-primed-for-big-earthquakes/29112962

http://www.homelandsecuritynewswire.com/california-dams-plagued-seismic-concerns

http://www.watereducation.org/topic-earthquakes

When Shasta and Trinity Dams were built, the existance of the Cascadia subduction zone was not well known, and most scientists did not believe it cased Megathrust quakes.

Shasta dam -- the centerpiece of the state's entire water system -- is only built to withstand a 7.5 lasting less than 30 seconds.

A megathrust quake due west of the dam at the Mendocino Triple Junction would range between 8.5 and 9.5 and last nearly 10 minutes.

Magnitude does not directly indicate damage, only total energy released. Both Mercalli(Shindo) and Moment Magnitude (Richter) scales are important:

yes, I know, but people commonly call it "richter scale" so that's why i put it in parenthesis. Same with shindo and mercalli. They are not the same scale but they quantify the same aspect of the earthquake: as do Richter and Moment.

13 is called a Verneshot

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verneshot

> Mantle plumes may cause heating and the buildup of carbon dioxide gas underneath continental lithosphere. If continental rifting occurs above this location, an explosive release of the built up gas may occur, potentially sending out a column of crust and mantle into a globally dispersive, super-stratospheric trajectory. It is unclear whether such a column could stay coherent through this process, or whether the force of this process would result in it shattering into much smaller pieces before impacting. The pipe through which the magma and gas had travelled would collapse during this process, sending a shockwave at hypersonic velocity that would deform the surrounding craton.

> A verneshot event is likely to be related to nearby continental flood basalt events, which may occur before, during or after the verneshot event. This may help in searching for evidence for the results of verneshot events; however, it is also quite probable that most of such evidence will be buried underneath the basalt flows, making investigation difficult. J. Phipps Morgan and others have suggested that subcircular Bouguer gravity anomalies recognized beneath the Deccan Traps may indicate the presence of verneshot pipes related to the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event.

> If the Deccan Traps were the location of a verneshot event at the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary, the strong iridium spike at the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary could be explained by the iridium-rich nature in volatiles of the Reunion mantle plume, which is currently beneath Piton de la Fournaise, but during the end Cretaceous was located beneath India in the area of the Deccan Traps; the verneshot event could potentially distribute the iridium globally.[1]

1000 actually, I should have said 800. I was indeed wrong.

The main issue is just that scientits didn't realize the Cascade zone caused earthquakes until the mid 80s. When the USGS did core samples off the coast it was under Nixon and they had no idea what they were looking for. Only later did researchers notice the evidence of huge landslides and tsunamis, and the coastal upthrust. They cross references some of those landslides with reports of "orphan" tsunamis in Japan (waves with no quake before) and realized a huge tsunami that hit in 1700 was from a Cascadia event.

And thus we know the last big quake was at 9 o'clock in the evening, on January 26, 1700.

Natives also mentioned it caused a slide in the Columbia Gorge with dammed the river and created a lake 200 feet deep, which lasted nearly a decade.

Move to Ireland faggots, all the local farmers here have a plan to clear roads once they become impassable for 4 wheel drives. That and even if we have a volcanic winter, we get warm water up from the tropics that would give us at most what would be considered standard in Berlin.
