We don't have a lot of history like the Americans do, or Europeans. Our founding fathers are the Irish, French, English and Scottish. Those are our 'founding fathers' (if you will). We had these symbols on our old flag - which is why so many of us nationalists still fly it. The Red Ensign acts as a reminder of those who came from (primarily) Britain and France, who sacrificed everything for us.
The Montreal flag also has these symbols. It's a St. Georges cross surrounded by British/French flowers. It completely illustrates what Canada is... or WAS.
