Slavs moved into the balkans at around the year 600 AD.
Eventually the Serbs *and Croats* proved to be some of the stronger south slavic tribes. (some say the croat were serbs to begin with, however all slavic tribes used to be similar)

The greeks eventually christianized the bulgarians and some slavs after fighting them into submission.
The greeks sent missionaries Cyril and Methodius to write a uniting slavic alphabet, so the bible could be translated into it, thus making slavic conversion faster.
They wrote the glagolic, which wasn not accepted by the west slavs. A modivied version, made by the students of Cyril (who were likely bulgarians), was called the Cyrilic, and was addopted by the bulgarians, and later other slavs as well.
The greeks still practiced slavery, *but they did not take christian slaves.* (for all we know they prob did)

The bulgars fought on horseback, and had many successful campains against the byzantines, tho this is largly due to the fact the byzantines had many enemies.

The serbs refused to ally the bulgarians, and instead *had good relations with the byzantines.* (if the byzantines didn't have to fight off so many enemies, and play political games with the serbs, they would have probably hellanized and annexed the serbs mercilessly, as did Rome throughout their hisotry)

During the age of imperialism, the balkans were it's victims.
The ottoman turks were first used as mercinaries by the greeks, and later they went on to form their own nation, annexing bulgaria and then the rest, into the ottoman empire.
Balkans had very little contact to the enlightenment. And remained under turkish rule for around 500 years.
Although they were subjigates and forced to pay very large taxes, including the blood tax, turkish rule was not as oppresive as anlgo/french/portugese or spanish imrerialism. it was closer to the dutch / russian, where the people were allowed to keep their language, religion, culture, ethnicity, etc.

Liberation from Ottomans:
The west were generally allies to the ottoman turks. Because the ottomans controlled the silk road, and were the caliphate for the entire islamic world. The west aided the ottomans in the Crimean war against russia.
Eventually the west made a deal with russia. Such that russia was allowed to attack the ottomans, and later on the west would attack them as well.
This led to the Russo-Turkish war. Which ended in the threaty of San Stefano, which both sides signed. It gave bulgaria it's roughly modern day boarders, and macedonia.
The west however did not honor this contract, and even tho they did not fight in that war, imposed their will on the outcome.
Bulgaria was to be balkanized in 3 parts, the principality of bulgaria- which was to be independant, eastern rumelia- which was to be an ottoma vassel, and macedonia- which was to remain ottoman. Also they forbid russia to put a russian monarch on the bulgarian trone, so a german monarch was chosen instead.
Serbia and Greece were also granted independance, and they were tiny.
Bulgarian Reunification:
Revolutionary movements in bulgarian lands revolted, and east rumelia joined bulgaria.
This led to serbia *delaring a war and invading bulgaria*. (serbs today blame their monarch over this, that he was forced to do it by the Austro-hungarians)

First balkan war:
Serbia, Montenegro, Greece and Bulgaria formed the balkan league. And declared war on the now dieing ottoman empire.
Greek ships kept the main turkish force at bay, while the bulgarians and serbs fought the ground forces.
Bulgaria did most of the killing and dieing in this war, and thus annexed the most land. They also charged on Constantinopole, but *were defeated*. (the west may have aided the ottomans, i don't remember)
Bulgaria and Serbia had a contract, which stated that Serbia would get Albania, while bulgaria would get macedonia. This contract may have been broken by the bulgarians charging on constantinopole, and by them requesting Serbian aid for the battle at Odrin.

The ottomans took the chance to backstab bulgaria and retake Ordin, while rumenia took the chance to backstab bulgaria, and get dobridja.
Bulgaria lost the war, and their alliance with serbia, russia, greece, romania and montenegro was no more.
First world war:

When they got to the bulgarian and romanian boarders, they p much forced us to ally them under the threat of invasion.

Greece performed very well against the italian army, romania was very important strategically in it's oil supplies to germany.

Yugoslavia also because communist, so did romania.
The Cold war:
Yugoslavia had plans to invade albania and greece, both western allies (to create a balkan union). But the USSR did not apporve, they also feared losing bulgaria.
The leadership of bulgaria didn't care much, and attempted to join both USSR and Yugoslavia, but USSR *wanted them to stay independant*. (probably because it was an extra vote at the UN, and it gave an example to other nations, that communism doesn't mean serving russia)

Fall of the soviets:
Due to finantial difficulties, and many dick measuring conflicts aroud the world with the americans, the USSR became democratic, which meant it's collapse.
The transition process in bulgaria was difficult, as they mostly benifited from soviet aid, the former communist party (bsp) was on and off elected to power. The legal tzar joined the political scene, only to ally the turkish minority party, and lose popularity.
Yugoslavia started to collapse, because of rise in nationalism, and some conflicts with ethnic albanains. Slovenia declared independance, and so did macedonia. As the main yugoslav army was serbian, and those two nations were not serbian, yugoslavia didn't care much for their succession.
Serbia came to terms with the break up, but wanted to get a greater serbia out of it, Croatia however was not willing to give up land.
There were many cases of genocide and ethnic cleansing by all sides (muslim, serbian, croat, other).
The west intervened and supported non-communist (former nazi ally) croatia.
Bosnia was left a mess.
Eventually mongenegro and kosovo declared independance as well.

Modern day:
Left with no allies, bulgaria joined the EU and NATO.
Greece joined them as well, but they still have *difficulties* with the turks. (boarder disputes, situation in cyprus, and other). Also greeks do not honor denbts contracts.
Romania joined EU and NATO, they are still anti-russia. If you believe the media, they are proving good at fighting corruption.
Serbia does not recognize kosovo, and the macedonian church. They have good relations with other serbs on the balkans (monenegro and part of bosnia), they are also generally liked in maceodnia. They say they are trying to join the EU but who knows if they even are.
Macedonia was convinced by the communists that they are ancient macedonians, and that the bulgars and invaders as oppose to liberators. About a quarter of their nation is populated by albanians, both in teritory and population. They say they are trying to join EU and NATO, but who know if they are. They have a name dispute with the greeks, thus their name is FYROM.
Montenegro has it p good, and they will prob be the next to join EU and NATO.
Alabania is still thanking USA, but their economy is shit. They are in NATO and will prob join the EU after montenegro. They have dreams of greated albania, which right now seem realistic. They supply europe with drugs.
Croatia is in the EU and NATO, their economy is doing good, they dislike serbia.
Slovenia is in the EU and NATO, their economy is doing good, they dislike serbia.

My grandmother is Slovenian. Simply put Slovenija was a part of Austria all the way until 1918. There's no such thing as a "genuine" Slovenian because at least one of the parents is a Bosnian or a Croat (great grandfather in my case).
Most of the male populace died in WW1. The country is scarcely populated and without big urban centers comparable to Zagreb or Beograd, simply for the reason that there's no people to populate such places. They never truly recovered from WW1 loses.
The country is forested, the terrain is full of hills and mountains, and underneath those hills and forests are the dead. Basically it's all a very big graveyard of forgotten and vanquished soldiers. No matter where you go to dig in the wilderness you will inevitably discover remains of some dead soldier of this or that Wehrmacht.
It's a tame country that dindu nuffin because they haven't actually done anything of any significance, and though I like them they are a whiny and trecherous lot without a spine.
