Why do leftist cities have bike lanes?

It's a smart liberal idea. I know that sounds strange but its true.

Cuts down on fuel consumption. Is good for public health.

All around wins no downsides.

I am fine with them if there is enough demand, it doesn't take too much of the road bed, and the cyclist don't think they are cars.
>>
>>71091398
Bike lanes are necessary because retarded people are going to ride their bikes in traffic no matter what we do.

It's fucking retarded. I've seen people riding their bikes in the freeway.

Shit, they do anyway. It's basically the same as mandating warning labels on hair dryers informing the consumer that they should not be used in the bathtub.
>>

The worst are the assholes that refuse to ride in the bike lanes and insist on riding on the road. I can accept people biking on a road if there is no bike lane or sufficient shoulder. We spend millions of dollars on improving the safety of bike riders yet these specific assholes ruin everything. Don't get me started on the retards that ride the wrong fucking way down on a bike lane.

Is this the same OP that posted this same exact thread yesterday (or was it Wednesday?) but it was about trains instead?

Well my differential equations professor seemed to believe in it.

Also Lockheed martin claims they will have a working fusion reaction so who cares?

But reducing fuel consumption makes sense economically and environmentally. Cutting down on smog is a gain for public health.

The better question to ask is why don't right wing cities and towns have it?

Don't pretend to be a nationalist when you're overweight, burning through foreign oil in a truck you never use to haul shit around in.

Take a trip on up to the Ford engineering buildings and take a gander at how many sandniggers work there. I wonder how many spic-nigger hands assembled your car?

I get people have long commutes, the weather can be bad, or they live in a rural area, etc., but the automotive industry, for all the good things it has brought us, is not your friend. It works hand in hand with kike usury.

Fair enough. Just saying those usual generalizations are rather stupid. Same old divide and conquer bullshit. Me guuud, they baaad.
Plus, as a driver of a car (or motorbike) you can't seriously want that bicycle riders also switch to cars/motorbikes. So be happy they choose to not further congest precious roads, even if you'll meet a jackass every now and then. People are jackasses. What a shock.

>>
>>71091398
Cycling on the sidewalk is better in every way. Thats how it was for me in Texas and it was better for everyone.

Cyclists are smarmy little cunts who get in the way and consistently ignore traffic rules. Fuck them very much.
>>
>>71092481
i have never seen a bicyclist stop at a red light. even at busy 8 lane boulevards in los angeles.
>>
>>71092424
This. I went to Oxford a week ago and my mum said before I went: 'watch out for cyclists, they're everywhere'. Except that as well as having a shit-ton of cyclists, Oxford has a cycle lanes all over the place, meaning that I never once had to get around a cyclist. And then the day after I get home I find myself having to pass three cyclists riding in a line on a narrow road. I am all for cycle lanes if they get cyclists out of my way.

>>71091398
because liberal cities are expensive, meaning land values are higher and everything is more built up. Meaning fewer parking spaces. Bikes are great for when you know you're going somewhere where you'll never be able to find a parking space.
>>
>>71092893
I don't want more people congesting the roads, in fact I support bike lane proposals in my city when they happen. But if you have ever been to America the way they design bike infrastructure here is deeply flawed for the most part.
>>
>>71091487
Looks like a lot of wasted time and money paying city crews to F up roads and painting a bunch of empty bike lanes. Seriously outside extreme liberal cities. No one gives a crap about bike lanes. It's a rarity to see a bike in the bike lane. Wasted money that didn't need to be spent. Accomplishes nothing.
>>
>>71093749
>But if you have ever been to America the way they design bike infrastructure here is deeply flawed for the most part.
Okay, but that's a whole other problem. And I doubt it's fair to blame bicycle riders for such bullcrap, or the fact that they rather use the good old road, instead of needlessly stupid/dangerous bicycle lanes.
>>
>>71093868
I think a part of that may have to do with us designing shitty bike lanes for the most part.

They never actually stay in the fucking bikeline too, they always ride just outside of it to fuck up all traffic, and they do it on purpose.

If they want to use the road, they should have to pay registration and use license plates like the cars, otherwise they shouldn't be treated like one. Period.

kek. I wondered already how long it would take until the first Hupp Hupp Holländer shows up.

IMHO it's mostly a cultural thing, which also explains the existance of empty bike lanes in lefties cities over in America: top-keks imitating fancy European lifestyle, and implementing it in a top-down fashion (which never works).
>>
>>71094292
>If they want to use the road, they should have to pay registration and use license plates like the cars

That would severely disadvantage the whole idea of riding a bike, I don't ride a bike but holy shit in a city it's a fuckin good idea.

>Leftists cities

>>
>>71094990
The road isn't free, and the bike lanes actually do cost their own amount of money aside from the car lanes. Fact is they need to be subject to tax too.

Cyclists still have the advantage in that they dont pay for gas or often parking. More than enough.
>>
The best part about cycling is riding past carkeks stuck in traffic and seeing them pop a blood vessel
>>
>>71091398
They are good but when they reduce the current size if roads to pop then in it sucks. Vancouver is brutal for this.
The Chinese don't use bikes
>>
>>71091398

Looks like a lot of typical liberal boogeyman posts that automatically equate the concept of efficient urban planning with a silly idea the opposite team came up with therefore it's bad.

Bike lanes encourage bikers, and for every biker on the road, that means one less using a car to congest traffic that YOU sit in. That's one less parking spot at the garage that YOU use, and less pollution in the air YOU breath. If the city has a privately sponsored bike dock system where you can pick up a bike and drop it off at select stations across a city, the two coupled together ease traffic problems.

And for the faggots whining that it takes up one car lane, new flash: the more car lanes you add, the more people will be inclined to use cars which just leaves you with more cars on the road, more pollution, more angst, all while taking the same amount of time to get to work.

You are talking completely out of your ass. There are people who invest in suburb properties in Las Vegas for example, purely because a planning commission toyed with the concept of putting another casino nearby there 15 years down the line.

Everything you've referenced is third-hand bullshit. You are probably some greasy renter who doesn't know the first thing about realty. Right now my families 2nd home in San Diego has a University expansion being built nearby (Mission Gorge Road near Allied Gardens). Its going to double the value of the home because its going to become prime land for renting out to richy University students. The Trolley is already complete, google earth it yourself. That alone brought it up from 450k to 680k per the last estimate.

How much more of an ass whipping would you like?

Our state just passed a law requiring drivers to remain 1 yard away from cyclists in 30mph zones and 1.5 yards at higher speed limits. Drivers are required to cross double white lines and take any other action necessary to do so. Any bike-car accident automatically has the driver at fault.

Basically if there's a bike next to you, you've got the right of way of an active police car in order to stay away from it. Without any lights or sirens to let the guy around the blind corner on the narrow mountain road you're driving on the wrong side.

You just revealed how pathetic your powerlevel is. You assumed (very wrongly) when I spoke of the millions of dollars that it was the land value, it was not. It costs millions of dollars per year TO MAINTAIN THE BIKE LANES.

Have you ever even glanced, checked, even just fucking PEEKED at the cost to maintain roads? Its inflated, ridiculous, and absurd. Including bikes on the road doesn't change it, and if a portion of that road is used for the bikes well guess the fuck what? The car drivers taxes are paying for that bike lane, while the cyclists arent. We've come full circle now, and unfortunately, your liberal education has brutally failed you.

And low and behold he was crying to his friends about how i tried to kill him. I then posted the dash cam video on his wall and i watched the fall out. It was funny because it was obvious he got hit on purposes as you could see him looking right at me then pulling out. He took it down fast but the damage was already done. Yes. End of story. This is not "The Goonies" where big bad country club is gonna build a golf course and everyone gets moved onto the streets. This is the real world, where Daddy Warbucks builds infrastructure next door and you watch people with dollar-signs in their eyes start competing to buy your property at a premium. Those are rather small zones without traffic. You get there as usual. From there... you walk. Or take the bike. Or you take the bus/train/tram. But for the most part, walking is just fine.
>>

They pay tax for it in other ways, in most instances I'm sure they have a car as well as a bike. The current system is fine, all rego for bikes will do is reduce the rate at which people ride bikes

Within a year we'd have more hospitals staffed and potholes filled.

because leftist cities are full of bike culture faggots that pretend motor vehicles don't exist and literally beg to get smeared on the pavement every time they get on the road
>>
>>71091398
Good idea. Honestly wish conservative cities had them too, would cut down on fatties.
>>
>>71091398

I can see how they can be good, but only in the right places. Here in houston they are trying to make dedicated bike lanes. I have no problems with this usually, they are doing great things connecting all of the parks this way. However, the new lanes take away one lane of traffic for it. This means more traffic. Perhaps if this was offset by less cars, but it isn't. Houston is like 90 f amd humid all of time. If not that it is raining. And most live far outside biking distances anyways. These bike lines go unused because of this. Maybe it can work in california where it is nice all year round, but not in some places.

Public streets where bike lanes show up are generally paid by the general taxes to the local government.

Gas taxes go to the state or federal governments who are in charge of the express regional roads. These rarely get bike lanes.

Let's see if your idiot brain can understand.

If you're weaving along the edge of the road, then I have to move to the left to not smear you with thousands of pounds of metal. This means I'm edging out into oncoming traffic. Of course I can wait for an opportune moment, but on morning commutes there's no such thing - which means I either need to creep along at your peddly-bike speed with a thousand pissed off drivers behind me, or else I need to thread the needle with not getting into a head-on on one side and not running down your smug and stupid ass on the other.

Let's not even start in on the relative value of your smug self regard versus the actual congestion caused by your literally idiotic presence in traffic - after all, you getting your exercise is far, far more important than the literally hundreds of other people who have to slow down and watch out for you just to accommodate your lifestyle choices.

Of course then we come to an intersection. At least there's some entertainment value in seeing whether you've decided to be a vehicle today and actually obey the rules of the road, or if today you're Peter Pan and you're just going to swan out into the middle of traffic because fuck anyone else except yourself.

Maybe because the largest cities are all fairly liberal, maybe because in these very large very busy cities there is a fuckton of traffic and it's very dangerous to ride a bike.

I'm sure a bike lane is a massive waste in states like Idaho and Ohio, but in a big city a bike lane is a god send unless you really love getting murdered because you have to share the road with fuckwits checking instagram instead of their lanes.

>street infrastructure below can't handle this tower
>design is also ugly
>property values lower on surrounding tower and the units can't sell unless you sell at them at a loss because tower blocks views
>everyone wants to move into new tower, decreasing property value for the surrounding area

>factory maker wants to put up a factory in a residential neighborhood
>pollution, waste run off, noise, ugliness
>will consequently lower property values
>oh look, it's zoned so shit like this can't be put in

>developer wants to put up below market rate apartments so niggers can move in
>niggers move in, crime rate skyrockets, property values decrease

I know it's really "cool" and "edgy" to just face reality instead of letting it fuck you in the ass like a cynically depraved 35 year old that gets off to giving up, but zoning laws are pretty solid sometimes so there isn't rampant overbuilding that becomes like Pruitt-Igoe projects that are torn down 10 years later because nobody had the insight to plan ahead and foresee problems that might arise from these type of structures right in the center of a city grid.

Urban planners put in zoning for a reason, and believe it or not they also like to provide economic stimulus to an area while creating a win situation for residents that like living there. They are far more qualified than chucklefucks like you that advocate rampant zoning then think they're in the clear because of cherry picked scenarios that have actually occurred in the past and completely backfired a decade down the road just wasting more tax dollars tearing shit down and readjusting utility and transport infrastructure.

>Example 1
So they want to move from the towers nearby into the new one? Thats just business in action. You're also dealing with a scenario where this infrastructure was already build, the spiking/increase of values has /already occurred/ of course most stuff is only going to go down from here. Cmon Anon.

>Example 2
If there was no zoning already, it could only go on the edge of a residential neighborhood unless it got everyone in the neighborhood to sell where it wanted to insert. In that case, there would be plenty of warning and people could also sell their homes to those who wanted to work in the factory. I'll concede that if this happened in a large population town- it would decrease values. The problem here is, it /cant/ happen in a large population town, unless it was at the literal edge of a housing development. Anything built around it after that would thus be unlikely to be more homes, but instead another factory or infrastructure based around it. So this scenario is invalidated.

>Example 3
You're right about this and thats the irony, unfortunately. This happens all the time even within zoned areas. They put up low income housing wherever the fuck they want, and you cannot say no because the zoning commission will enforce city council/etc on placing it there.

In a situation with /no/ zoning, they can't build the low income housing unless someone sells their plots. It could still happen, but the funny thing is, they dont normally "do" low income housing in non-zoned muncipalities. The entire reason it gets forced on you in zoned municipalities is because those same zoning commissions and council are the ones who push for it. You are more likely to deal with a low-income housing injection in a zoned municipality than a non-zoned one.

Three strikes anon, maybe 2.5. Its okay if you want ty try again :^) if you try to sass me, please put in some effort in the reply.

I live in Houston, a city with no zoning laws, and I agree. The only issue I have with zoning laws is that it increases the price on the good residential areas to the point that you pretty much have to be earning high 5 figures to low six figures minimum, to afford property there. That is just a natural consequence of artificial limitation of the market, however.

Here in Houston, its common for a low-rent apartment complex to pop up in a neighborhood with decent homes. Not rich homes, but the owners keep them up and its a nice area, nice enough to raise a family in. But the apartment complex, either initially or eventually, becomes inhabited by ghetto types, and white flight is initiated; causing property values to drop, and then the whole area becomes a no-go zone.

>>
>>71098548

Once again, your viewing each scenario as dichotomy. This is where an urban planner, somebody skilled in reaching compromises between two parties like this, steps in and finds a solution that everyone can enjoy. It IS possible to find economic stimulus while keeping everyone happy. Not just saying "hahaha fuck you I'm building a factory here because I want to". In this case the city might welcome a factory, and may even give tax credits to develop it elsewhere or yes REZONE land in a different part of the city to let the factory be built.

Roads still need maintenance even if no one uses them. Building roads still costs money regardless of future wear. If bikers would be fully charged for expanding roads by bike lanes they would never be able to afford them. Literally free riders (economic term google it).

Oh c'mon bruh you mean you don't have a Trek bike with Shimano gears and a Nalgene bottle? Lol are you a poorfag? I bet you wear normie clothes when you "ride" too, haha, get with the times, faggot; you aren't a REAL cyclist.

God I hate bike supremacists.

Yeah, but any "clique"/club is pretty gay.

Not that lonewolfing is the answer, but one could also stand above all that crap.

Because they're doing the leftist thing of pandering to the minority and crippling the majority.
I drive. I have to, everything is too far from me not too, and objectively cyclists are a plague on the road. That being said i do like to ride down bike lanes on my motorbike sometimes, scares the shit out of cyclists.

The roads are for cars. Heavy fast moving cars. Bikes are neither of those things. If i was riding a skateboard down the freeway I'd get arrested, and rightly so because I'm not a car, I'm a hazard.

Drivers pay to use the already overcongested and undermaintained roads, cyclists don't.

A few I've seen do their best to avoid traffic and ride with awareness that they're slow and vulnerable, but most ride side by side and clog up major roads. I've even had lycra clad cunts ride up at stop lights and rest on my car. One decided to grab onto my spoiler once for a free ride when i took off. He was promptly run off the road.

I can see some dumb fucks here will ignore valuable things or not learn from someone/something because it's labeled "leftist". I live in a pretty alt-right tier city central balkans and we're building kilometers of these now because there are so many cars you can't breathe, to at least get young adults off the car. Fuck the american lifestyle.

Bike lanes ties into Obama stimulus pkg., my city had to put them in for taking federal funds for repair work, they take money for that and they need to comply with other mandatory stuff. Sucks, but that's what happened in many cities.

There's three options when it comes to bikes.

A. Uphold current laws, and have them use shared lanes.
B. Uphold current laws, and have them use designated lanes.
C. Change current laws, and have them use no lanes.

Most people who bike would prefer option C.
Most people who walk would prefer anything other then option C.
Most people who drive would prefer anything other then option A.
Therefore option B is the solution that appeases the majority.

The exact fucking opposite of the "pander to the minority" shit you are saying.

We use them even in the military for quick deployments and with great success.
Behold, the swiss military bike (pic. related).

You're full of shit
>>
>>71104211

You again! How you been leaf shill?

And not quite, B appeases no one, see a majority of road users are CARS, a minority of road users are BIKES.

Bike lanes pander to BIKE riders who are the MINORITY, and having cyclist safe spaces pisses off DRIVERS who are the MAJORITY, making B a shitty choice.

Option D: Ride your tricycle on the footpath and stay off the road.
>>
>>71104494

Ok, how so?
>>
>>71091398
Its unfair. Bikers dont pay road tax but yet get to use the road.
>>
>>71091398
What's the fucking point? Can't you just make a decently sized sidewalk and just split that from the middle?
Sidewalks generally speaking have a lot less traffic than car lanes and in the event there is traffic, the ones going by foot generally are not the ones who are in a hurry.

+ you'd save a ton of paint each year when. You don't need to repaint that path whenever it wears down by weather to the point that nobody can see it.

Does a scooter and a skateboard fold out from the chassis?
>>
>>71104621
Your option D is the option C I listed. Which pedestrians are heavily against. There are more pedestrians then cyclists, so lawmakers shy away from that option.

You say you're against option B because you don't want them to have their own lane. Does that mean you support option A then? Having them in the same lane as motor vehicles?

Because the only possible 4th option, is making human powered vehicles illegal to operate. And that's really not a possibility at all.
>>
>>71104621
Riding on the sidewalk is illegal because of how many people get run over. Sorry bub but anyone urban city designer worth his/her salt wouldn't give that idea a second look.
