upgraded to 7.4, depth 7-10 km

Magnitude: Currently sitting at a 7.0 magnitude. Could change with more data.
Location: Occurred 1km WSW of Kumamoto-shi, which is the location that has been struck hard by the quakes yesterday.
Depth: USGS is listing this at 10km making this quite a shallow 7.0 - expect this to change with more data.
Intensity of Shaking: USGS is reporting this as Severe (VIII). DYFI reports are reflecting the same intensity, Severe (VIII). This is also the same intensity as previous major quakes over the last few days.
Expected Fatalities for both quakes: No Data yet.
Expected Costs of the Earthquake: No Data yet.
Aftershocks: Expect a lot of aftershocks over the next 72 hours. These will taper off, but naturally will be larger due to the larger magnitude of this main event.
Tsunami: There is no official warning, instead a local advisory to local coastlines. Here is the report from NOAA.

The way the earthquakes are measured, a 9 is like 100 times stronger than a 7.

South Cascadia has been nuts for a few days now, today it's going wild in response to the stuff in Japan.

Japan had a 9.2 in 2011. Alaska had a 9.2 in 1964. Chile had a 9.0 in 2010. Indonesia had a 9.3 in 2004.

Cascadia has not had a major quake since 1700.
>>
>>71040238
Depends where the quake happens. If it's near the surface and below a major city, even a magnitude 7 can do lots of destruction.

This is a 6.9 in San Francisco. That's one of the busiest freeways in the US, at rush hour.

The only reason only 60 died rather than thousands is that the World Series was happening. Loma Prieta would have been nearly as lethal as 1906 if everyone hadn't stayed home or late at work for the day.

Dude beach front property along the northern California coast is dirt cheap. Lots of injuns but almost no blacks and latinos, outside of the college town it's very rural and conservative. And because of the drug cartels, local police are very pro gun and anti bullshit. CA has an awful reputation, but there are pockets of paradise... just infested with idiots for the most part.

What you are forgetting is that a tsunami is no ordinary wave. A normal wave is just the surface lifted to a certain height. A tsunami, on the other hand, is the entire sea from top to bottom lifted to a certain height. This carries the water far beyond the shoreline and takes almost everything in its path.

You really have no idea of the power of millions of tons of water on the move.

That was a 6.8 in 2001, Nisquali. Killed one person... who got startled and had a heart attack. Smaller than Loma Prieta. Less than 1/1000 of the intensity of a 9.0.

Shit, Humboldt had a 7.4 a few decades back, that's probably the most we've had and it only knocked a few houses off the foundation. Megathrust quakes like Chile, Alaska, Japan, and Indonesia have had in the last few years are an entirely different sort of event.

Current quakes are pushing the coast up. In the big one, it falls. It's up 30 feet since 1700.

Image is from a seismograph in LA. The top link will bring you to that stations readout. The USGS has some good info on how they work linked from that page.

Also, not entierly related, but pol might be interested in Long Valley Caldera, and The Geysers geothermal field. Long Valley is a supervolcano like Yellowstone just east of the Sierra near Yosemite, while The Geysers are the largest geothermal power facility on earth -- they pump processed sewage water from the Bay Area thousands of feet into the ground and then capture the heat of a local hotspot (It's popular for Wine in Napa because the soil is volcanic, clear lake still has gas eruptions and boiling patches occasionally). It's essentially wastewater injection like from fracking, but liberals are doing it so no one cares it causes thousands of earthquakes ever week. If you ever look at the quake map and wonder why Cobb keeps getting shaken, that's it.

I have zero knowledge here. So question. Is it natural for earthquake strengths to generally be consistent and grow and shrink with each other?

Scroll to the bottom and it shows the earthquakes from the last few days to today in SoCal.

They go from being in the mid 1's to the mid 2's

It's actually been proven in multiple studies that Canadians are on average far, far more intelligent than Americans. America scores near Turkey and Bangladesh. Canada scores near Japan and Taiwan and is by far the most intelligent "white" nation.
