Earthquakes are weird as hell. Medium-sized quakes are the worst I've felt, but I've felt a lot living in SoCal my whole life. Imagine sitting at your computer but you are really in a snowglobe. Then a giant shakes the snowglobe rapidly, back and forth. It makes you realize how small you really are and that Mother Nature can fuck you up at any time

> Coast mountain ranges reaching up to nearly 10,000 feet start less than a mile from the shoreline

It's going to be bad, but not that bad. Crescent City is the only place that's going to get completely destroyed, even Eureka has hills and the bay to protect it. And neither of those places are particularly big losses.

More dangerous is the undersea supervolcano along the Blanco Ridge that could erupt and vaporize several miles of ocean water, creating a steam explosion on par with a small nuclear weapon and generating a localized tsunami hundreds of feet higher than anything the fault could produce.

Two words: volcanic ash.

Imagine if pieces of glass and asbestos were ground into a fine powder, then heated to boiling lava temperatures.

Now imagine several feet of it covering every square inch of over half of the United States, killing untold amounts of people and animals via asphyxiation and pretty much causing an all-natural version of a nuclear winter, killing most, if not all, plant life in effected areas, pretty much dooming the inhabitants of said areas to die of starvation.

But god damn if those geysers aren't cool, huh?

Why can't Americans be that smart during quakes?

Only one at my old office who actually did the right thing during our 7.2 was the dog, Sophie. We had to go back in and pull her out from under a desk, she was so scared.

On the other hand, we did get video evidence that dogs can feel the early shock of the quake before humans can. Sorry for low quality, the WebM is corrupted and the GIF can only be that big for file limit.

"Said Hanz the cuck as the African immigrant thrusts inside his woman slowly, establishing its clear black supremacy over the white man. His wife begged for more, while Hanz kept his thumb and one finger on his tiny micropenis, rubbing it continuously. As the negro man came inside his woman's tight white pussy, Hans felt a perverse satisfaction washing over him. While his wife laid bare on the bed filled-to-the-brim with the nigger's seed. Feeling satisfied,
he licked clean the Black Man flaccid lice-covered from head to finish."

I never get a chance to post this but since there's actually a thread on quakes... only known footage of the Cyprus Structure collapse in Oakland during '89. If it weren't for the World Series keeping people home or late at work to watch, it would have killed closer to 6,000 rather than 60.

Some useful quake tips for planning ahead:

Don't live in an apartment supported on stilts over parking areas.

Know how to turn off your gas, and have one of those damned emergency wrenches handy.

If you have kids, have a plan. Talk to your local fire fighters and police about THEIR plan. MAKE SURE YOUR CITY HAS A FUCKING PLAN.

Don't live in LA or San Francisco, because then the last thing you see before you die will be LA or San Francisco. At least up north it's pretty.

7.0 is an okay earthquake. "Massive" for you pansies but nothing people in proper earthquake countries can't just shake off after half an hour and move on. The nips are fine. Y'all just need to stop being pussies.

Spent a year there 2013-2014, after that I've visited two times. I think it's a really nice city, maybe a bit on the small side but it's got most of the stuff you need and you don't have to deal with the chaos you find in Tokyo.

It caused massive damage in a small area but the total energy released wasn't that much.

It's like if a B-52 dumps its whole bomb load on your neighborhood, that's not going to be shit on the seismographs.
But your neighborhood is kind of fucked
>>
>>70926733
It isn't. I often sleep through 6.0's. From 6.5 to 7.0 it's varying degrees of "Oh boy I guess this is an earthquake now, it prolly won't get worse than this".

7.5, really, is when you start getting close to "jeez I guess I should vacate the premises afterwards, maybe stop my day, crap that's a lot of broken shit"

Nips get 6.0s all the fucking time too. I bet they wouldn't be crying either.

For the failopinoys et. al., the shindo measures the peak shaking at a particular area, while the moment magnitude scale measures the total energy output.
Like the Christchurch quake, this was a quake that was small in total energy but it caused incredible shaking in a small area, which is why it was shindo 7 but only magnitude 6.4

>>
They say Kumamoto got a 6~7.0 earthquake on Google Japan news. A few buildings collapsed and a few people caught inside, but nothing really that catastrophic. After all, it's Japan. They're prepared for it.
>>
>>70927558
The moment magnitude scale is far from useless because it tells you the total energy output which is geologically very important, and also tells you how large an area will be damaged. The shindo however is will tell you how much destructive energy a specific area received and how fucked that area is likely to be.
Both are very useful in my opinion

This is that one black fucking moron your company had to hire because of 'Moral Correct Society Superior Cunt Tasting Rules' (I don't remember the proper term, but that suites it well enough. The one where colored people and women get a free pass now instead of credentials).

This is that black moron that also starts running for the door when the earth starts shaking because his stone-age instincts doesn't let him access the situation and remember proper training.

Same guy to have a chunk of ceiling smash his skull open and we all have to have some bullshit company funeral and act like we give a fuck about his family or him for that matter.
>>
>>70927257
Fair enough, but then that's not helpful at all. A Shindo 7 might be anything from a Richter's 7.5 to a 9.8, since all of those look more like earthquakes than a fucking 6.2 or whatever the fuck number I saw on twitter.

>>70927382
And yes, I know what an earthquake looks like. I've also been in Tokyo during what was probably something like a 4.5 small tremor and no one gave a fuck, which is more like what I'd expect from people used to quakes like the Japanese.

list of things that a Shindo 7 has:
You will be unable to move as you'll be thrown around by the shaking
Most furniture will move and will jump around
Wall tiles and windowpanes are damaged and may fall, reinforced concrete block may also fall
Most or all residences have collapsed or been damaged, no matter how earthquake resistant they are
Most or all buildings suffer severe damage
Electrical, Gas and Water services are interrupted
The ground is visibly distorted with cracks and fissures

the Japanese refused to go along with the German demands. In late January 1942, even as the German authorities met at Wannsee to finalize the mechanisms for the Holocaust, Tokyo's policy was, as some of their diplomats said, "to go easy in our policy towards the Jews." In mid-March 1942, the Japanese policy towards the Jews was set out in a message broadcast from Tokyo to all diplomatic stations in the Far East. The message declared that the fundamental policy towards Jews, as set out in a Japanese Diet declaration in 1938, would be only partly modified to account for the Axis alliance. Jews would still be considered as any other group of foreigners, although the distinction of "Jewishness" would be based on race and culture. But this distinction applied only to stateless refugees - which meant German and Polish Jews. Any expulsion of Jews from Japanese-controlled territory was considered contrary to the stated Japanese national policy of the Common Brotherhood of Mankind (Hakko Ichiu - literally "8 roofs, 1 house"). Therefore, Tokyo's official policy was this: Jews holding citizenship of any country would be accorded treatment comparable to citizens of that country. Jews without citizenship would be considered stateless, in the same category as White Russian émigrés. This group of Jews would be under surveillance because of their "racial characteristics." Another category of Jews, those who could be considered "useful" to Japan because of their political or economic influence, would receive the same treatment that they received prior to the war.
For the duration of the war, the Japanese held to this policy in the lands that they occupied.
