>A U.S.-trained Iraqi crew working with a U.S.-supplied M1A1 Abrams tank now known as the "Beast" played a major role in taking and clearing the town of Hit in western Anbar province of ISIS fighters, a U.S. military spokesman said Wednesday

>"The tank has been so successful, this one tank crew, that American advisers have given it the 'Hero of the Day' award for several days," said Warren, a spokesman for Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve in Baghdad

That means the ISIS troops didn't have decent AT or didn't expect an MBT on the field so didn't deploy Kornets or TOWs.

M1A1 doesn't have the higher tech armor at the A2 model does, and the A1 armor can be defeated by more modern AT weapons. Remember at the tank was designed in 70s, maybe the in 80s. The A2 model has more "high tech" armor including DU layers, and special mesh/ceramic layers not found in the A1 models.

ISIS must not have any anti armor weapons or that must be a really good tank crew considering it's only an M1A1.

Frankly I'm mot a fan of those rolling metal coffins(tank's), even the heaviest and most advanced armor systems can be defeated by modern anti tank weapons that can be hiding almost anywhere. For instance the RPG-29 has defeated the armor of a Challenger 2, wounding the crew and has destroyed two M1 Abrams killing and wounding several crew members. If I remember correctly the RPG-29 is such a serious threat to armor that the US military forbade the new Iraq government from purchasing them. To think there are much more advanced anti armor systems then the RPG-29 that haven't been employed on a wide scale.

It only takes one person armed with anti-armor weaponry that knows how to point it in the right direction to take out a tank.

>>
>>70878751
I think there's only ever been one recorded destruction of a Challenger 2, and that was by another Challenger 2 in a friendly fire incident.
>>
>>70878751
For an RPG or light AT weapon, you're going to need a very good shot to penetrate newer MBTs like Leo2, Abrams, T-90 and Chally2s. From what I read about the Chally2, it was a lucky hit that took his foot off.

These days, there are tons of upgrade packages for tanks, most being spaced amour to defeat HEAT warheads (ones that most if not all light AT weapons use) and armour plates for IED protection. Ontop of all that, there's always the several metric tons of shit and equipment for the crew that hangs off the top and side of tanks, which actually do more protection then you'd think it would.

Besides the armour aspect of the tank, there's the offensive capabilites. A tank can sit in a field far from the useful range of an RPG and cause destruction. Thermals are pretty scary when you think about the poor dickhead who's on the wrong side of the cannon/coax.
>>
>>70879402

Yes one of the crew members of the Challenger 2 lost his foot, but several others were wounded as well. The nature of the injuries of the other crew members were not disclosed to my knowledge.

In the cases involving the Abrams, less armored then the Challenger 2; Penetrations by the RPG-29 proved to be much more effective, causing major damage and killing several crew members.

not really accurate information

usually worst thing can happen in a tank is the ammo explodes. with the abrams the blast doors blow off the back of the tank and all the over pressure just goes out and up and the crew lives.

its a good tank with the exception of fuel consumption. takes about 10 gallons of jet fuel to start one.

During the first main assults of desert storm, some Abrahams had dozers attached to the front.

In the pitch black of night, the tank coloum would advance on Iraqi infantry trenches (52's & 72's has been fortified along the tranches, but we're btfo by air and long range Abrams fire). The dozer tanks would flank the trenches and literally bury alive all the Iraqi infantry unlucky enough to be stuck in the trench. Literally thousands perished like this, and any who tried to escape the trench were gunned down by machine gun fire.

At sunrise, limbs of defeated Iraqi soldiers coulb be seen sticking out of the freshly toiled earth.

Definitely, a main battle tank is a force to be reckoned with if used properly at range in conjunction with its mobility. It's when you get into urban setting or dense forest and rough terrain that they start to become a liability. A mistake a lot of poorly trained militaries make.

Still would be uncomfortable getting in one those things though, claustrophobia, plus having enough years of experience operating heavy tracked vehicles to understand there limitations and vulnerabilities. It's the thought of getting high centered, stuck in mud or having mechanical failure in a combat situation that doesn't sit well with me; with any heavy tracked vehicle it's bound to happen sooner or later given enough miles.

Still I would be tempted if a recruiter outright offered me a spot on an M1 crew, that megalomaniacal part of my brain says YES!

out in the open you cant get near one. in the urban setting you should have infantry support with you. it does not always work out that way but that is the idea.
if you pop up and fire something around an M1A2 sep or sep v2 the crew instantly know where the shot came from due to a clever little gadget thought up by darpa mounted right on the turrent.
the combatant would be lucky to get off a second shot before the building hes standing in starts falling down around him.
the top of tanks are the weak spot so maybe he would get lucky on that first shot and breach it. but now he has to deal with the infantry squads hunting his ass down, or the second tank that could open up on the building hes hiding in.

you would almost have to believe virgins were in your future to do something that insane in the first place.

To be accurate, the M1A1M that Iraq operates does not have 'higher tech' armor that is used by the US military.

The Abrams in active use by the US Army (M1A2 SEPv2 and M1A1 SA) and USMC (M1A1 FEP) have all been upgraded to the current '3rd gen' DU armor.

Depends what crewman you are. Loader has fucking tons of space, for obvious reasons. The Driver has a decently sized hole. The worst is probably the gunner. You're stuffed into the right corner of the turret basket. You better not have long legs, because they'll be bent at a 90degree angle at the knee. Legs get very sore, quickly because there's no room to stretch. The gnr also sits essentially right in the cmdr's lap. For the most part, the commander is unbuttoned and standing so it's not always so bad until he kicks you in the back when you hit a bump.

>>70882688
>out in the open
You'd have to a master of stealth to get past (usually) 4 vehicles. You've got 4 gnrs with thermals. All 4 commanders have thermals. The driver might even have thermal cameras too. That's at least 8 people looking. Besides all that, tanks rarely stay in one spot. Mobility is one aspect of armour.

Have a look at the union for the Mediterranean
All the countries being fucked or regime changed or arab springed are supposed to be in a club promoting stability and prosperity

After years of European and American freedom they'll be begging for closer union for the stability and gibs

But not before their entire population moves to europe first
Job done for the jews.

we have to craft a new force to fight for the next 15 years of war against terror.

the war without end
that is the whole idea. a war that never ends. a cause to the public to accept less and less constitutional freedoms at home and in so many other countries that follow our model.

so when shit starts to die down we use the cia to rekendle it and help it fester once more into an excuse to again act.

this shit dont end until the money runs out which it wont or the goal of world bankers is accomplished with a new one world system of rule following the planned collapse of America.
Russia and China will have to get on board. Any country that does not get with the program must also go. And they are going one by one. Really only 4 are left. Russia, China, Iran, and NKorea.
The US military is just the instrument being used to influence those pesky holdouts to get with the program.
911 set all of this into motion.
So far as ISIS goes, yea our clandestine services made them, trained, funded, armed them. They are just a tool to keep the money and fear flowing.
Just another brick in the wall.

Far as war goes, preparation is 90 percent of it so as long as the people believe a threat looms in the distance, they will keep the machine running.

With regard to Iraqi forces, other themes emerge: the underestimation of Western resolve and capabilities; the failure to launch a preemptive strike against the allied coalition when the opportunity was available; the failure to properly integrate and network air-defense systems; the integration of air-defense missile and artillery systems; the need for truly professional (versus political) air and air defense forces; the importance of redundant command and control systems and facilities; the importance of survivable underground complexes; the importance of survivable mobile missile launchers; the vulnerability of nuclear, biological and chemical production and storage facilities to air strikes. you might wana have a look at it yourself

>he debate over the performance of Soviet weaponry in the Gulf War has been intense and has already resulted in a sweeping review of the Soviet air defense system in the wake of the Iraqi defeat. The Soviet Minister of Defense is reported to have admitted that Soviet air defenses have "weak spots" and that the MoD is "analyzing the use of the armed forces of the United States and other countries during the war."

>Izvestiya commentator V. Litovkin, pointed out that the bulk of Iraqi military equipment was Soviet-produced, and that Iraqi Army officers had been trained in Soviet military academies. Thus, for many people the war in the Persian Gulf represented a clash between "U.S. and Soviet military science, between their weapons and ours.... It is obvious," he concluded, "which side has the advantage..."

>Colonel Aleksandr Tsalko, who headed a Soviet Air Force Training Center prior to assuming his duties as a Soviet People's Deputy, observed that the crushing defeat of the Iraqi Army made it clear the Soviet military doctrine and the entire model of military development were obsolete. On a 1 March Moscow Radio broadcast he stated:

>Some military authorities in this country continue to believe that the outcome of a war is determined by a clash of huge masses of ground troops. It is sheer madness. The war in the Gulf clearly showed that the Iraqi Army was simply overwhelmed by air strikes and the troops had to keep their noses buried in the sand.

>Tsalko disagreed with those who claimed that the war demonstrated the inferiority of Soviet military equipment. "On many counts we are not so much behind." He stressed, however, that the main lesson of the war was that huge amounts of tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery pieces were "absolutely useless."

>He stressed, however, that the main lesson of the war was that huge amounts of tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery pieces were "absolutely useless."

The RPG29 hit the lower glacis plate of the Challenger where there is no Chobham armor. That's why they put ERA on that plate but I'm guessing the tandem warhead neutralized it.

The RPG29 can pen the side of an Abrams, heck a newer RPG-7 probably can as well. Luckily there are spall liners and a lot of space armor. There ammo and fuel is also kept separate. If you are not directly killed by the HEAT jet and/or over pressure you have a decent chance of living.

It was a big threat because it could knock out a tank and possibly kill crew but it wasn't going to change the tide of the war.

Arabs are culturally bad soldiers though.

Basically they can't handle situations that don't go according to plan and will pass the buck up the chain of command to fault.

Heres an example of what i'm talking about. An Iraqi conventional army FOB is being overrun by ISIS insurgents and an Iraqi QRF is stationed 2 clicks away that could easily reinforce the FOB and suppress the attack but officers within the QRF won't take action without the chain of command telling them. They'll literally let their own people die out of fear of retaliation for stepping out of line with Command.

Culturally they lack the initiative to make executive decisions on a basic level.

Witnessed.

The joke is that US investment finally produced competent Iraqi operators. . . but they're all Hashd Shaabi and Hezbollah.

thats the joke, this "elite iraqi crew" is probably the only one that actually meets basic US crew competency

further proof that ISIS would be gone already if obams wasn't a fucking pussy
>>
>>70875443
remember that video when two M1A1s were stuck on a bridge and were shot at by ISIS with rpgs, it just bounced off, their ATs are only good for fighting Assad's tanks in close quarters

This is what it looks like when an army actually wants to win and isn't dropping LEAFLETS instead of BOMBS like Obama is commanding. He says we're doing everything we can, yet one Iraqi tank crew has done as much against ISIS as our entire "bombing" campaign. I just hope history remembers what a liar and traitor Obama was.

Why the fuck would they blow it up after capturing it? It can't be that hard to figure out how to drive a tank, at least not compared to planes where you will die if you don't know what you're doing. Even if they could only figure out how to get it to move, that's still a mobile cover and an armored troop transport for them. At the very least they could break it down for scrap and parts.
