The best way is the loo, because shit is very energy intensive you can produce biogas from it to run busses (like we do in Norway) and after producing biogas then we are left with a inert fertilizer that is quite good and without any pathogens. It should not be used on food crops every year because there is metals in it which the ground should not have too much of, but it is great for planting flowers in public parks and so on.

The most important way to do it is to get treated drinkingwater AND proper toilets. That way people can avoid being exposed to it.
The drinking water treatment should have one or more of these treatment steps:
UV-lights is quite effective at killing Cryptosporidium, but should only be done as the last or second to last step because any particles in the water will make the UV lights less effective.
Membranes with very small holes might also be used, this might cost more money though. It will on the other hand save a lot of space. Depends what is most important. This will also remove tons of bacteria and so on
Ozone, using Ozone you can get rid of lots of parasites and bacteria, but you can not transport it so you need to make ozone in the drinking water treatment plant.
There are other ways, but the cheapest and simplest ways are these 3. India would likely not have a plague with it if they stopped shitting in the street and started drinking clean water instead of straight from Ganghes. Boiling the water also works.

Well, engineers like myself often tend to go "it's too expensive" or "it won't work" when we hear a new idea when someone have not backed it up with science.
We already know what happens when people shit in the street. disease, short lives, bad smells, parasites, high child mortality, dangerous swimming spots and way more deaths when there are floods or heavy rains.
Wastewater and Drinking water is likely one of the most (if not THE MOST) expensive public utility in western countries. But by having Good wastewater treatment we have less healthcare costs, people are healthier so they can work harder so it is good for the overall economy and so on and so forth.
