Owners training might have a factor in the up bringing of the dog, but smaller dogs suffer from small dog syndrome and will just chimp out and attack/bark at anything that they perceive as threatening. Usually if you do a psych screening you will find that the owner of a violent pitbull is also a sociopath. I worked for 2 years at one of the best dog training schools in Romania. They train 90% of the police dogs here and i can't tell you how many times gypos or honorary gypos came there and asked me or my colleagues to make their dogs as violent as possible and give them the police obedience and physical training. Ofcourse nobody will do that.
They usually want the dogs to intimidate or to use in dog fights, thats why they get pitbulls.
There is the odd normal person who has a pitbull and wants it just to behave and listen to basic commands so when they talk it out for a walk it doesn't feel like you're with a retarded 2 year old who could get itself killed every 2 seconds.
We had some cases where we trained them for obedience, gave them the normal physical routine and then after the owners picked up the dog, they tried to make them violent by beating them or abusing them (cigarette burns, cuts, cut years or tail etc) and when the dog wasn't becoming violent because of the abuse they would just kill them. Throw them off a bridge or hang them in the woods.
So yeah, the problem is the owner 99.9999% of the time.

All the alpha predators such as grizzly bear, polar bear, kodiak bear (I believe), etc. do not have any fear of dogs and will chase them down and tear them limb from limb, even if they don't feel like eating the dogs.
Some of the large bears are taught to fear dogs by humans accompanying the dogs and shooting loud blanks while shooting them with bean-bag guns and such while dogs bark and keeps advancing towards them (uncharacteristic of prey animals)

With pitbulls, when they bite, their jaws lock down and its hard to pull them off or beat them into submission (which can take upwards of a minute with no weapon). The best thing you can do is choke them out. With good pressure around its neck you can make it pass out in 5-10 seconds by restricting the jugular, and if at any point it lets go to bite the victim again then you're ready to pull it off and get your full weight behind the choke.
With choking you also avoid damaging the victim further and the pitbull, which makes you safe against any kind of litigious pitbull owners in the event that you kill it with a pipe. Of course if you have a pipe or a wrench in your hand at the time of the attack then a good clean swing to the head will end the encounter in a heartbeat, provided you get that hit. Which could take a long time if the dog is re-positioning.
As a plus, even a child can apply the necessary pressure to put the dog unconscious.
