I was in the same position as you, 21 years old with a pretty good life selling cars making around 40k-50k a year, had my own place, my own car, plenty of friends and parties a lot but I wanted something more and naturally turned to the military. Something drew me to the marines and 8 months after visiting a recruiter I was shipping off to Parris island. Been in the fleet about two years and been on one deployment, so far the marines isn't that bad. Definitely beats your average civilian life and I'll be able to go to college for free in two years. I joined the Canadian Army when i was 17 as an armoured reconnaissance soldier but I joined as a reservist and for the states I think you should go for the marine reserves they are the best I have trained with Us army reservist in Fort Knox they were good guys but lacking. 26/m former 11B here, just want to share my story with others so they don't end up making a potentially life-changing mistake.
I know that some mouthbreathers join the army/marines on a whim. Don't be like PFC shitbird, put a lot of thought into this decision.
If you think your job is bad now, it's not. Maybe you're apathetic, in a rut, whatever. In the military it will be worse. You will be cold, often miserable. You will work in the blistering heat and be miserable. Your feet will hurt, your back will ache, and your legs will give in while the doc gives you Tylenol and the VA tells you to shove it up your ass. Oh, you'll lose your hearing, too. You'll be around a slew of slick-sleeve retards who spend half their days with their finger up their nose and you'll be forced, by the heaviest hammer of justice in the land, to take orders from people who are no more qualified to serve you a burger at Wendy's than they are to order you around.
I can't tell you if you'll like it or not. But if I could give you some advice, don't join a combat role and don't join the Marines. You want to be a hero, that's okay, every young guy wants that. Join the air force, private. Bar bimbos don't know the difference between a marine assaultman or a navy supply specialist, nor do they give a shit because once you pull out your tricare membership they'll suck your dick regardless.
You'll do what you want regardless of what anyone tells you. I've been there. We all did. But remember my post when you're in basic, standing at attention for 5 hours at 0300 in 8 degree weather. I was in the Marines. No really.
I spent time in 29 Palms, Pendleton, Camp Schwab and Kinzer in Okinawa, Thailand, and Korea.
The United States military is FUCKED. And I mean it: FUCKED UP. It will be literally the WORST decision you make in your entire life. I'll explain.
Now, first off I wasn't some shitbird who couldn't follow the rules. In fact I was pretty much a poster-boy Marine. I got promoted fast, won numerous awards etc etc. But I got out as soon as my first tour was up.
Here's why:
1. The U.S. military, including the Marines, is NOT your grandfather's service. It is a proving ground for every Marxist/Feminist diversity experiment you can possibly conceive. Even in the Marines you have idiot SJW women officers and niggers in charge of everything. White male officers are increasingly rare. And these women and minorities are given far too much power and they use it to fuck up endlessly. Failed training operations, tons of injuries/friendly-fire fuckups. You name it.
2. The Marines are politician's bitches. Imagine every time some leftist cunt fucks ups in politics and needs to blame someone else...Well you guessed it: the military is the first place they go.
3. The rules and lifestyle you lead in the Marines is SHIT upon SHIT. Horrible prison-quality food, broken ancient equipment, terrible or non-existent services, and shitty living quarters. But you want to know what really makes it suck? The rules. In most quarters you CAN NOT bring in women, or if you do, the door MUST be propped open the entire time. Each barracks has a guard on duty and you must sign the women in, and they guard will ensure you are following the door-open rule. If you are not an officer you will NEVER, EVER get laid on base. If you are overseas this is even worse. One nip whore in Japan gets a well-deserved raping, and you will be confined to base with everyone else. We were confined to base for 4 months straight. 1 of 2

6. Fuck your recruiter: you military experience is useless, and no one wants to hire veterans. I had to literally drop my military experience off my resume and LIE to get a job afterwards. Having my military experience on my resume hurt my job possibilities. There are small exceptions to this for law enforcement and various gov't work.
7. Your are pissing away the years of your life when you should be getting college degrees. Fuck the trade meme. Get experience, get a college degree from an affordable State College. Once you have been in your career for 5+ years, get a Master's / MBA from a great school part time, and get a six-figure job.

I spent 6 years in the Navy as a Boiler Technician from 1989 to 1995.
Do not join the Marines or Army as an infantryman. There are very few marketable jobs on the outside you can use those skills for and there are plenty of ex-infantry guys to compete for the jobs that might apply to your MOS.
Join the Air Force and try to find a job that will translate to something in the civilian world. Civilian employers like ex-military because you will have a huge amount of responsibility at a young age and are taught excellent techniques for handling challenges.
I got out of the Navy and got a job in a power plant. I make over $100k per year with just a little overtime. Everyone I work with is ex-Navy because it is one of the few places you can learn the trade. There are guys I work with who work a lot of overtime and are making $200k per year.
Let the military teach you a trade and pay you to do it.
I know a lot of ex-infantry and they are good guys, but they don't have a lot of high paying job offers. The smart ones got out and used their GI Bill to get a degree and then land a good job.

Not to bash the marines, I respect what they go through to live up to their prestige, but generally in the wider military world (if vet threads from /k/ are to be trusted), it seems they aren't seen as special in any specific way.
The general consensus I find is, the marines are just a more brainwashed infantry force with a specific amphibious and naval specialisation, still not outstripping the army in anything major.
Whereas the Army's promotion is much faster and it's logistics are alot stronger because they have their own dedicated supply lines, which are naturally better organised given that it is a bigger organisation. Then there is also the wider variety of roles in the Army, which, again, given it's size is much more accessible than the marines close nit corps of "careerers" who wont budge.
Whether infantry is the best choice is a different discussion, but I wouldn't join just to break your own personal apathy, you can learn discipline in any role, best make it one that offers high paying training.
Personally I'm training to join the RMC, but if we lose Brexit I'm cashing in my duel citizenship to work my way to the equivalent in training quality in the US Army, I just want to get to be the best at what I do, and I'm determined to do it in the forces.

I want to echo some of the sentiment here that you'll want to consider a MOS/rate that's transferable to the civilian world.
If you got a good head on your shoulders, I'd consider Navy or Air Force unless you really want to be a Marine. An alternative is joining the Navy as a fleet marine force (FMF) hospital corpsman (HM). This might be the best of everything. You have a respected job, get to serve with the Marines, and have great stepping stone to a lucrative medical career.
For people like me, the military was a fucking miracle. I had a terrible childhood and was destined for failure until Uncle Sam adopted me. I served 6 years, got my B.S. in Biology, and am now finishing up my PhD. Huge fucking turnaround for me.

1. Two years state community college and gotten an AA in something useful while working part time. Paid cash for the degree and lived at home. Spent 4-6 months afterwards working pro bono or on internships and built a portfolio of work.

3. Went to a State college undergrad program in evenings and weekends. Gotten 4 year degree in about 6 years with no debt and with 3.5 years or so of work experience in-field.
4. Worked for 4-5 more years in field, and then gotten a Master's or MBA from the best school I could get into part-time again. I'd finance this.
5. Go get a six figure job.
6. Get into education, politics, finance, mass media etc. and use my power and influence to destroy the left.
