The design and technology was based off, but was ultimately ran and improved by the Russians (who had fewer German scientists then the US). And the aim was never for the moon, it was for space.

But like the nuke the other side stole/developed the technology fast enough that it doesn't matter.
>>
>>70375891
The goal of the SPACE race wasn't to get to the moon. The US space program was more German than the Soviets.

Yes because Wernher von Braun never had a questionable past.

Although I guess it is right they were all American citizens at the time of the space program.

Russia won the first act, known as the post-WW2 stretched to orbit and first manned flight in space.

America won the second, known as the post-Vietnam era riding high on multiple apollo lunar missions as well as numerous successful deep space and planetary probes.

I say the Corporations tho, have won this final phase of space exploration. They will be without nation, heritage, or sense of duty, only profit. Elon Musk and Corporate Space Fascism here we come ;)

>>70375270
Soviet won, but it is kind of easier to spend a huge amount of your production and science towards something that does not directly benefit the population in a system with a planned economy.

Mostly the soviets but the yanks won the moon bit.
It speaks volumes that the shuttle was an overpriced dangerous piece of shit that cost more than an expendable rocket whilst the Soyuz has been in use since 1966 and is one of the safest launch vehicles and spacecraft in history.

It would have been nice is Korolev hadn't died in 1966, maybe the N1 would have worked instead of being finished by idiots and the soviets would have landed on the moon as well. They had no hope of beating apollo but it's a shame all their work never came to anything.

It was doomed, the Americans had Von Braun as the strong man at the top of Apollo, the soviets had no one with Korolev gone. Korolev was a genius, the Vostok and Soyuz are clear showcases, the people who replaced him just weren't him. (Nasa similarly went off the rails after Von Braun retired in 1972, which is why we got the waste of space called the shuttle).
Add in political meddling demanding they test fly the thing before test firing all of the engines and other similar idiocy amongst the soviet leadership and it was doomed.

>>70377777
Yeah the soviet system had a lot more failures, especially with unmanned probes, than the US did too, they just covered them up.

The soviet moon landing plan was basically a scaled down Apollo, a two man Soyuz with a one man lander, since the N1 rocket theoretically only lifted 70% of the payload that the Saturn V did. They had test flown the soyuz and the L3 lander individually, they just never got the N1 to work. So the hardware is all out there rotting in warehouses somewhere.

The Space Race MADE the USSR, so when they gave up after USA claimed the Moon, the USSR was bound to collapse due to the shortcomings of communism, although they put up a good fight and kept the plates spinning for 22 years. They had to go and invade Afghanistan, though. Don't invade a country made out of pure mountain.
