Nah, the Syrians started sporting a Shtora knock off on all their vehicles some months ago. I guess it is cheaper/easier to produce because it uses infared LEDs instead of infared lamps.

There is a guy on twitter called Ivan Sidorenko. A few months ago he sent coordinates to the twitter of Russian ministry of defense and after some days they reported it has been bombed.
This week there was a video of rebels using some kind of underground storage for cover. Ivan asked on twitter to find the coordinates. Some guy on twitter found it and Ivan sent it to the Russian ministry of defense. The tweet however was a "response" and was not visible on the twitter main page so /sg/ didn't notice it. 4h later some /sg/ people tried to find it on wikimapia. Some guy posted pictures and coordinates from the location (probably from twitter) and I posted a picture of Ivan calling the airstrike. Some /sg/ people thought that it was /sg/ who found the coordinates although the tweets were already a few hours old.

I asked this twice already in /sg/, but never got a clear reply: How in the Lord's name can SAA forces be retaking Palmyra and liberating the western and central parts of the country when they cannot eradicate those rebel/ISIS pockets scattered around Damascus? This is ridiculous. All the major frontlines are hundreds of miles away from the capital, but there are literally outter districts of the city controlled by rebels and ISIS.
There was a Kurd a while ago telling me that those pockets are heavily fortified with geographical advantage and they pose no threat to the security of Syrian loyalists as they're in constant defense mode, but it seems it's completly not true if ISIS can murder 175 people in the cement factory in the outskirts. My understanding of warfare might be antiquated, but isn't it as if Tsar pushed Napoleon back to Polish territory, yet had 1/4 of Moscow under French control? Just makes no sense to me.

Palmyra was good PR that the Syrian government desperately needed. I'm guessing Russia came up with the plan since they enjoy big headlines and fame from the Syrian campaign.
In reality of course it's better to liberate all areas closest to home which is why they retreated in the first place.
Deir Ezzor would also make for a good tale but it would be suicide.

They've made huge gains over the years around Damascus.
The typical Syrian strategy in heavily entrenched urban areas is to wear down the enemy with encirclement and heavy bombardment over a long period of time. When the enemy is weakened enough, cut the pocket in two and proceed to storm one of the pockets.
It's how they did Homs, how they're doing Damascus, and how they will start doing Aleppo in the near future.
