Virginia is the wrong state to try this. If these monuments belong anywhere, it's here. Half the state is a shrine to the men who died on both sides. Virginia is a curated museum to the first English settlers, the home of the southern Founding Fathers, and the crucible of the Civil War. You don't get to remove things because it's fashionable to be offended.
Even liberals around here steadily agree that the Civil War was a central piece of American history, and trying to bury it is dangerous for us as a society. There are still lessons to be learned from that period, and they're still relevant today.
Build monuments to slaves. Put a stirring, prominent statue outside every government building that had slaves help build it. They deserve recognition. This is not a zero-sum game, it's American history.

The confederate flag is not a symbol of freedom, independence or states' rights or any of that other bullshit. It is the symbol that was adopted by rich land-owning treasonous douchebags who wanted to drag America back to the feudal era.
If the confederacy had not been crushed, we would, in some ways, be even worse off than many black slaves. You see, the assholes who wanted to keep slaves looked at poor white people as pests akin to possums or raccoons who root through the trash and leave it scattered on the front lawn. They couldn't own us and treat us however they wanted and they had slaves to do all the work that needed to be done on the land they owned. They spoke of freedom, but what they meant was the freedom to get the Hell off their property and die of disease & starvation. If the confederacy still existed today, a very few people would own literally everything, including all the black people. What's more, a portion of their massive profits would go towards paying goons to beat the shit out of people like us. We wouldn't have educations. We wouldn't have a social safety net. We wouldn't have any hope of being anything better than penniless drifters.

Eventually Sherman began using his tactics of total destruction against civilian targets. He rarely fought anyone other than some militia in the georgian woods. Don't worship or praise Sherman. His tactics became the hallmark of war crimes in the future and arguably destroyed the last remaining ounce of chivalry in war.
