The Brits didn't, the British East India Company set up trade ports and had great relations with the locals up to the point where most Brits who'd go to India ended up marrying locals, adopting the culture and sometimes even converting. It's only much after when the Crown took control of the EIC after its bankruptcy that the Empire part took off.
Same for the French in North America, they set up trade ports and had good relations with natives, most wars were caused by the natives who attacked first and for the Brits in India most battles were Europeans attacking other European trade posts. There's a saying that says "the cost of war is certain, its outcome isn't."
Europeans didn't invade, they traded for the most part. And even if the Brits did end up with "invading" India, that shouldn't be a free pass for others to do it.
