Impossible dimensions. You can't have a right triangle with sides of 2, 5 & 8.

>It isn't specified what Object A is.
In this question, A = Area. The sentence should read like this: "Find the area of the object; A = __" it was just written with poor grammar. A fucking child can easily deduce the meaning of "object" in this context, which is the only shape present in this question. Christ.

If we assume the object is a trapezium/trapezoid, then the numbers don't work, they contradict each other. But if they were consistent, then there would be several ways to solve it. From our radios to our television channels.

If you ignore the hypotenuse figure, the answer is 70 (16-12/2 = 2, (2*5/2)*2 = 10, 12*5 = 60, 60+10=70) but because the hypotenuse is 8 the unlabeled length must be 6.244 but then that makes the other lengths invalid so the whole thing is wrong and If you think otherwise you're a moron.

>>69961652
If it's indeed a trapezium that means that the top and bottom side are parallel so you can make imaginary lines (like the one labeled 5 in the pic, and an equivilent one on the other side) then add the areas. But of course it doesn't work in this case, partly because it's not stated to be a trapezium, and partly because it can't be a trapezium because the numbers don't add up if it is.

Nowhere in the question does it state that the object is a trapezoid. The object itself does not necessarily convey the correct properties to be a trapezoid; the lines of length 12 and 16 are not parallel. The distance of length 5 may not intersect with the line of length 16 at a right angle; you can't assume it is. It's impossible to conclude that this object is a trapezoid.

Yes, taken with the values you need to solve the area 70 is correct, but the question also gives you the values for (c) and (d), and they can't possibly be 8 otherwise the shape is wrong. This means you either fall into two camps

a) The shape is not a trapezoid, and is in fact something completely different - It is not as It appears and therefore we can't answer it

Okay idiots, because apparently you all got <200 on the math section of the SAT.

If the shape is a trapezoid, the top is 12, the bottom in 16, the sides are 8 and the height is 16, then the shape can't exist. Here's why.

The shortest side of each right triangle with side 8 and height 5 has to be 2, because (16-12)/2=2.

We all remember our pythagorean theorem? A^2 + B^2 = C^2?

However, 5^2 + 2^2 =/= 8^2.
29 =/= 64.

I'd say common core BTFO, but there's no actual evidence that this is from common core. Most math books have mistake somewhere, anyway.

If we assume the top line is parallel to the bottom line, the dotted dimension is impossible.

If we don't assume it, the polygon is under-defined.

The most the area can be is 82.6821 square units.

You do realize that there are metrics where the problem makes perfect sense, right? It's probably non-Eucledian geometry. The author needs to provide the metric for the corresponding geometry. You can pretty much make any problem like this work if you have a correct metric.

They're all in the same font. Depending on which information you trust, you get different answers.
Either A=70
Or A = 14*sqrt(8^2-2^2)=108

In math, the answer to such a problem is "undefined"

Which, I guess is the only correct answer to the question.

What in the nine does font have to do with anything? It was extra information, albeit wrong, that was thrown in to throw off people who don't know what they are doing. Like with word problems:

>Jack and Jill go up a hill to fetch a pail of water weighing 8 lbs. Its a mile up hill one way to get the water. If Jack started at home, how far did he go down hill to get water and come back home?

With the answer being one mile and 3/4 of the paragraph being useless.

There is a huge difference between trick questions giving you superfluous info you don't need, and one giving you information that breaks the question.

This is the type of question in elementary school I would go back and check my work on at the end of the test by adding the area of the triangles to the rectangle then spend the next 15 minutes writing why the question you asked me is stupid and how I deserve extra points for finding your stupidity
>>
>>69965613
If they're all written the same way, there is no way to know which information is correct or incorrect. Depending on which numbers you trust you get different answers.

In real math it is called an overconstrained system and the solution is undefined.
>>
>>69965584
There is definitely a solution on a manifold. You need metric or something said about the manifold. There is not sufficient information for a unique solution.

>>
>>69966385
We always draw a little semi circunference and use greek leters to denote the angles, just a misscomunication.
>>
>>69959207
Easy. Assuming height 5 is perpendicular with length 12 and 16 (which are parallel due to the sides being equal), the area is average lengths X height, in this case being 5[(12+16)/2]=70 square units.

The main issue with the picture is that fucking triangle. In order for the hypotenuse to be 8, again assuming it is a right triangle, the leg with the length of 5 is actually the short leg of the triangle. The other leg (depicted as the short one) is actually about 6.24 by using the Pythagorean theorem, thus rendering the lengths of 12 and 16 geometrically impossible.

Of course, images are NEVER to scale unless explicitly stated but this one is exceptionally bad. In order to maintain the triangle, the trapezoid would have lengths of 8, 12, 8, and 24.5.

An apple (7) plus 5 equals berries. Berries equals 12. Three bananas plus one equals 7. Each banana equals 2. One banana (2) plus one berries (12) plus one apple (7).

Final answer is 21.

>>69965411
Each apple is equal to each apple, and three apples makes 30, so each apple is 10. One apple (10) plus 8 bananas is 18, so each banana is 1. Four bananas (4) minus 2 coconut halves is 2, so each coconut half is worth 1 also.

1 coconut half (1) plus one apple (10) plus three bananas (3) is the final equation.

The answer is 14.
