I'm a white male, a property owner with an advanced degree, financially independent, and I've been thoroughly fucked over by cops before.
Once was in New Orleans. I was just walking down the street minding my business. Some nigger asked me for a cigarette. I gave him one and walked on. Next thing you know two plain-clothes detectives are grabbing me. They threw me on some guy's porch and put me in a chicken-wing hold while they searched me - obviously of the mistaken impression they'd just witnessed a drug transaction.
They didn't find anything but I was PISSED. I was talking bad to them, calling them crooked cops who didn't know their fucking business, lot of trash talk from me.
So one of the cops says to me, "Fuckwad, if you say one more word you're going to jail."
I said, "On what charges?"
They immediately handcuffed me, threw me in the back of the car, and drove me to the jail - but they stopped in the sally-port area, right before the actual entry into the jail.
There, the NOPD has a nice little spot behind a couple dumpsters where they tune people up before they bring them into the jail. They tuned me up good.
Maybe I shouldn't have talked shit to them. But I was within my legal rights and they weren't.
Know what they ended up charging me with? Criminal trespassing, for being on the porch they threw me onto.
Also, you can't bail yourself out of the Orleans Parrish jail unless you own property in Orleans Parrish, and none of the bondsmen will touch you if you're from out of state. I ended up doing nearly a month in that shithole before my court date came up and they turned me loose because the cops didn't show up for court.

My hometown and parish in Louisiana has gotten investigated by the justice department, internal affairs and has been forced to scale back their police budget because even the feds thought a town of 30,000 shouldn't have so my military hardware. I think there's something symbolic about putting the hands behind the back.
Once you do that, it's over, you're arrested. Up to that point, maybe you psychologically feel you could still break away somehow.
But that definitely does seem to be the sticking point in a lot of these police abuse cases - people struggling to keep their arms free.
Maybe someday society will accept that it's not at all unreasonable for a person to NOT want to be arrested. And considering the sorry state of Law Enforcement in this country, no one seriously respects the police anymore, they act only out of fear when the police order them to do something. Hell, there's no telling what you're in for once you let them put the cuffs on you - likely as not they'll beat you silly while you're defenseless.
But for now I guess we'll just go with the party line - you should obey the police no matter what they tell you to do, and you should keep your mouth shut while you're obeying them.

I got arrested for public intox less than a block from my house.

When I turned around to the sound of the officers voice he was just about to pull his gun and I could tell from the way he talked to me that he was hoping I'd say or do something stupid so he could shoot me.

He just told me he wasn't allowed to talk about what the cops that moonlight their security do and I was told I couldn't see the security tapes by their corporate office unless there was a subpoena.
