My girlfriend is a behavioral therapist who works with autistic children. A huge part of it is parenting, the worst cases tend to be kids with parents who don't talk with them, aren't involved, or are otherwise neglectful. Kids with better parents tend to be much easier to help, especially if they are treated early on in their development. Those children mostly get so they are able to cope and function normally, the really severe cases can be like in the video and pretty much no amount or quality of parenting helps.

I was diagnosed with a shitton of stuff when I was younger, including a form of autism. Most of it was bullshit, but there is one actual issue that I have. I can't do what people tell me. Even if it's something I kind of want to do, if someone is trying to force me to do it a switch just flips. Asking is fine, suggesting is fine, notes or signs saying to obey are fine too. It's just something about a person doing it that "triggers" me. Got my ass kicked a lot when I was younger, spent as much time in detention/suspension as in class. Got arrested a bunch too. I've designed my life now in such a way that it limits that from happening now, mainly through limited interaction with people.
But it fucking sucks, life would have been so much easier if I could just let people have power over me, instead of making them force it every time.

What you said does not invalidate my question. Regardless of his condition, he is human, meaning he longs for attention. Even he has no intentions or does not have a theory of mind, he can still be conditioned to behave in this way. If every time his mother gives him attention he feels good and the sure thing to get her attention is to hurt yourself, then you will eventually learn this and start to hurt yourself. Even if that would work, can't join the military in Canada with a record like mine. And I doubt the military could do more to me then any of the secure treatment facilities I was in. They had to force feed me through a tube at points, because even though I was starving they kept telling me to eat, so I couldn't. The entire idea behind one of the places was that toughness would break anyone, I broke a lot of bones there, but eventually I just aged out.
