In the case of the law that makes killing a woman with an unborn fetus double homicide, that law was probably written around the time this country was formed. Back then people were ostracized from house and home if they didn't conform to public morality. The bible has a verse about abortion, and that was the end of all thought on the matter for most people.
Obviously times changed, and with them public morality also changed. Now people are split on the issue, and the argument boils down to whether it's more immoral to kill an unborn fetus, or burden society with an unwanted child.
Abortion isn't an issue with a clear choice. It's one of those topics that really doesn't have a good solution, but I think it's important not to focus on the negative aspects of any given issue, because every topic has both good and bad points. It's whether or not the good outweighs the bad, to me.
