How do we save our steel industry?
>>
>>69680604
It's fucked mate, let it die. Unless we leave the EU and are willing to put 200% tariffs on Chinese steel, we've got no chance. Government spending in the steel plant is basically a black hole, and will suck up more and more cash as time goes on.

The government is probably best spending the money on a new industry in the area, with substitute skills and roles.

>The government is probably best spending the money on a new industry in the area, with substitute skills and roles.

I very much doubt Osborne is capable of pulling this off, given how he has been completely outmaneuvered by China

by recognizing that steel production is key strategic industry that must be protected from loss leading tactics employed by china and india

the ability to manufacture steel and downstream metals into sophisticated equipment is a military necessity in a time of war

WHY DIDN'T YOU NATIONALIZE IT?
>>
>>69680604
you dont cucks
>>
>>69680604

Nationalise it. It's better that people keep their jobs even if it means a small loss for the country.

I actually petition my local government to give jobs to the unemployed in a kind of neo-national service. In return for a living wage they move rocks from one end of a field to the other.

It's a good way of making sure people get money. The steel mill could be the same.

>>69681502
>chinese steel

Isn't China importing their steel?
>>
>>69683698
And where do you think government gets its money from to pay for all this?
>>
>>69680604
Specialize in exotic alloys. Meehan drove basic alloys to lowest cost producers.
>>
>>69680604
>>69682492

get rid of free trade agreements that make shitty chinese steel cheaper than domestically produced steel.
>>
Buy more swords.
>>
>>69684034
The Meehanite process made it possible for lower skill steel workers to compete with experienced, high skill workers. Labor costs are greatly lower and become more important.
>>
>>69684028
My employer does nothing but alloy, and we're getting the shit kicked out if us by imports.

It's called marching into London in mass numbers and demanding the current government step down.
That's how other countries do it.
Britain has no balls, nobody from the far left all the way to the far right like Cameron yet he sits there constantly taking the piss out of the country and its people and all people do is bitch and moan from their armchairs.

Supply and Demand. Over the last 10-15 years, China has spent large amounts of capital installing NEW equipment. They are going to rule the 21st century in Steel. All others will fade away. I work for a steel company in the USA. We are hurting and will hurt more.

You don't, you enjoy neoliberalism goy

We did actually ship the steel beams off to China to dispose of immediately before any real investigation could be done.

Historically, China has been our scrap recycling plant; hence all the shit they put in the air without regulation that eventually blows our way.

Just as one small sign, I was told that I wanted crapsman tools with steel stamped Made in the USA. I did happen to get those shortly before they changed over. And I like to abuse things.

I've never had to bring the old stuff back to Sears. The new stuff? Uh, yeah, even the managers have been surprised at how it turned to putty without even any abuse.

too bad that in your "country" anything made of steel is probably considered a weapon so you'd have foundries turning out goods only to be binned.

that steel mill lost at least a million a day. 365,000,000 a year. 3500 jobs, £104,000 a year the taxpayer will pay to keep a few people in employment.

This is socialism ladies and gentlemen

socialism is literally playing make believe

each worker is worth a -104,000 a year to keep employed??

Stop giving communists control of your government and embrace capitalism
>>
>>69689040

capitalism is viewed with such negativity in this country. people ignore completely how capitalism makes their countries great to begin with. The voluntary exchange between people is apparently exploitative and instead they would prefer the government to be a paternal god responsible for everything in your life. people in this country essentially grow up expecting the government to take care of every aspect of their lives and its only getting worse generation to generation.

we will be a totalitarian communist state soon enough. it also explains why people are so welcoming to islam's authoritarian nature.
>>
>>69688319
Literally all three of those things are terrible for economic longevity.
Mainly because internet anything can move in a matter of weeks and wipe out your industry. Pittsburgh will never be a major economic thoroughfare so I wouldn't call that an avenue, and medical will fuck you in the ass since
A)You let demoshits run your medical industry and likewise your state
B) southeast already dominates the industry

We don't seems to be the plan.

Really should put massive tarrifs on chinese steel but osbourne is in their pocket so it wont happen.

If we do nationalize it then what will we do with it and also how to stop it losing 1mil a day? we could always pump out lots of steel for our own projects such as HS2 and 3 etc but to stop it making a loss no idea since chinese steel is super cheap.
>>
>>69689920
>Really should put massive tariffs on chinese steel
Yep. US puts up to 266% tariffs on Chinese steels already
>>
>>69690453
>>69689920

How does massive tarrifs on chinese steel benefit us?
>>
>>69687175
The Chinese import a lot of scrap iron/metals. Labor intensive industry benefits the Chinese.
>>
>>69690945

benefits us both surely? we get cheap steel, they get their money
>>
>>69691048
Historically, your little island, bereft of natural resources except for maybe a tiny speck in Wales, has been able to dominate the world through slave labor and transportation bringing raw materials in so that you could manufacture them better than the rest of the world.

So having the Chinese do the steel might make sense, but only if you were to be worth your value added tax turning it into useful products.
>>
>>69690772
Massive tariffs completely wipe out dumped chinese steel, which is usually of a bad quality unless bought from high output nationalised producers, as the economic choice. It's only cheap anyway because of specific subsidy that encourages flooding markets in order to drown out and kill native industry, just as has been done with oil by OPEC, so that they can later raise prices and reap the benefits down the line.

Our steel producers aren't uneconomic and it's simply untrue to push that sort of line - if they were actually selling at prices pre-dumping, then they would be in economic trouble as they are now, and would still have to compete against non-chinese non-dumped steel market prices.

Pretty much. The only steel that's not super shit is from the big nationalised mills, but you can't get that at lots less than say, 20 tons a piece. The rest is from cheap mills where it's literally defrauding people, and because of the protection for chinese business, they get away with it, start a new company, do it over and over again.
>>
>>69687329
Their wages will rise and they will outsource it themselves eventually
>>
>>69696299
Yes, but it continued due to technological development. Even your Industrial Revolution was predicated on the caloric supply needed to sustain the population needed to work the factories that was imported from Peru known as the potato.

Ask the potatoniggers how well it worked out when they tried to rely too hard on a foreign crop. Or maybe ask me since a lot of them washed up on our shores and made this country great. It's a give and take. But there's a reason why your castle surrounded by a moat is the world's capital of finance. It had to trek all the way up there from Northern Italy after the fall of Rome.
>>
>>69696715
Wow, you are literally retarded.

> The century when potatoes were introduced into Europe
> The next century
> The century of the industrial revolution
