Forgive me if I'm generalizing, but I think the poor in Mexico have it better than the poor in the US.
Even the poor in Mexico have little tiny shacks where they live and can raise chickens and pigs, have tiny farms, store water from rainfall etc. Whereas the dirt poor in the US don't have any of that because our zoning/building regulations are more harshly enforced.
