I've only seen the first few episodes of the show, but I've read the book and it's good. It's actually mostly about an alternative history set within an alternative history. So in book/show's history the Axis win.. but there's a book (in the book, in the show it's a filmreel) presenting an alternate history where the allies win (though not in the same way as in our reality, the UK and US end up having a cold war)

I couldn't bring myself to watch the show. In the trailers the main turn-off was the focus on the obvious "hero" characters discovering newsreel footage. In the book there is a disconnect between the occupation of the USA (which is shown as background to the multiple character arcs) and the awareness of an alternative history that is published by the titular man in the high castle but resonates with the subconscious of the characters.
I need to re-read the book again myself for my own pleasure as much as this terrible description I've attempted here.

The show is alright when it focuses on the alternate history and the political/detective stuff. Shit when it focuses on the love triangle and especially the inevitable "racism is bad" moments.
Japan is a softer version of Germany that's a little bit more lenient but just as authoritative and insane.
In the series, a Japanese detective is attempting to find resistance members distributing these mysterious tapes and must do so before his time limit runs out and is forced to commit seppuku.
There's an American antique dealer on the Japanese side that provides some lighter moments who is basically a big weeaboo even thought he Japs clearly think he's a buffoon. .

It barely makes sense to compare the book and the show, since apart from the basic premise and setting they are alike in very few respects.
As someone who had already read the novel and counts it among his favorites, I couldn't have been happier with the creative decision to ditch the source material. A faithful adaptation would have been lousy TV, and a bastardized adaptation would have been a shame. Telling a totally new story was the best possible outcome.
