I'd say the first. The circumstances by which it was started and the concentration of death over such pointless and minuscule gains for much of the war really puts into perspective how bad it was. When you lose thousands of men and are unable to gain more than a few dozen or maybe hundred yards only to be forced back the next day or week, it's pretty shit. At least World War 2 was a mobile war for the most part.

WWII was by far the worst war in human history, not just because it has the highest death toll ever (even disregarding the jew thing), but because it left a wound in western civilization from which we will never recover. It shattered Germany, the bulwark against the east, into pieces. They literally stuck a wall dividing the capital city into east and west.

I think the official number of deaths by poison gas is in the tens of thousands, can't remember if I saw ti online or on an exhibit by the IWM. Sounds like a lot but it's fucking nothing compared to the death toll of any major battle in the war. Before gas canister launchers were a thing, it was very easy to avoid and would often backfire. By the time gas canister launchers were a thing, gas masks were semi-standard issue and gas drills had been hammered into every infantryman.
The much, much larger effect it had was disabling enemy combatants. Mustard gas was painful as fuck but statistically very unlikely to be deadly.

The one submarine used during the war sank itself twice and only managed to kinda sink an enemy ship while completely destroying itself,
gatling guns aren't really machine guns, their effect on the battlefield was MUCH more limited and had many, many disadvantages compared to machine guns, and naval mines were in use since the Revolutionary war. more modern versions of naval mines were in use since shortly before the civil war. Precursors to the modern land mine were in common use since the late 16th century.
There's lots of tactics and other stuff involved which make the Civil War more like a classic war with some modern-ish tech. The first true modern war with truly modern weapons and tactics is probably not the civil war. Might not have been the Second Boer war, but it was probably some other late 1890s-early 1900s war.

If you had the unpleasant luck of being sent to the Pacific however it was also fucking awful, probably worse than Europe. Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, etc. were probably the worst battles any American force has entered since Petersburg

In terms of a war itself for its time, in context all things being equal, 1 because people ran into death, literally. And many were blown to bits and was the first contemporary war.

They were two totally different wars entirely. If you were in WW1 you would be commanded to jump into machine gun fire, and either do it and die or get shot by your CO and die.
In WW2 the fighting was still brutal and on a huge scale and the destruction was immense but at least you aren't being ordered to commit suicide.

The pacific was brutal on all accounts. The japs were stuck with a technologically inferior early 30's army but they made up for it with defenses and some decent strategy/tactics, oh and fighting to the last man.
I can't help but mention the Phillipinos/Vietnamese/Burmese/etc who literally had to run for their lives or be genocided, they ran inna woods, scrambled what arms they could and began a long, drawn out and brutal insurgency.
For every Philipine victory for example the japs would raid a town and literally kill all of it's inhabitants.
Also the Aussies, they were critically outnumbered, constantly faced numerically superior forces in land combats, if it wasn't for their superior training and the SMLE, Owen and bren they would have been overwhelmed by japs.
