Okay my parents are pretty based especially my dad who was poor and got a business degree while studying in New York. When I was a kid he would tell me countless stories of his experiences in America and Norway and the stuff he was surrounded with such as the cars, abundance of everything, food, lifestyle and especially the music and movies.
He was blown away by all the entertainment choices in these developed countries (especially America and Britain) and fell in love with American cinema of the 60s-80s era and of course The Beatles, Elvis, The Doors etc. When I was a kid he would reminisce about the moon landing or any other space expedition and say "Wow you see anon, the USA is so advanced." and proceed to "tsk tsk tsk".
Basically the west has a very huge influence on my parent's Chinese background and they want me to follow in their footsteps. I grew up in a third world country and they didn't want me to make friends with "the locals" because they thought it would corrupt me. Before I moved to New Zealand I swear to god they said:

I think definitely with the Christian thing the common ideals of morals, working hard and loving your neighbour etc definitely helped. My parents are Christian but are UBER laissez faire as they also follow Confucianism and Buddhism along with traditional Chinese folk religions (religion in China is very very complicated, people like to mix and match)
When I took history in high school and studied the scramble of Africa + Age of enlightenment exploration type shit maybe it's true the original colonies just wanted to extract resources but these places became lucrative enough for their own people to settle of course the original europeans would want to help their fellow countrymen once they're settled well enough. It's hard to exactly pinpoint what was winning formula, i think christianity also played a very positive role in it.. Also there was high focus on being very intelligent and productive etc. That was considered the epitomy of "cool".

That's true. I think in the start of the 1900s china started to use "simplified Chinese" to try spread literacy. If you go to Hong Kong or Taiwan, they still use traditional Chinese script because those places had better education and were smaller (not to mention Hong Kong was under British rule).
