The hightide of roachposters drove some of them like Comfy M.D. away.

But even so, I not only miss the regular namefags but also the 'known'anons, like the German SAAnimeguy, the Polish guy, Simon-the-Dachshund-owner, some serbs, the Brit that showed me the band 'Rome', and I guess so many others that came here regulary.

All you need to do is hide their posts. We can't let the turkroaches win by driving these threads to the ground. They're doing this because they're shills. It's a known fact, you don't see many of them outside of /sg/ or any other thread that relates to the wrongdoing of the Turkish such as the Turkroach that raped that Japanese woman and they all went to rush to the aid of their fellow rapist comrade to shitpost in those threads.
>>
>>68495858
I don't think the roachposters are the problem anymore. We have like two of them left, and they can be easily hidden.
But netherless they did damage
>>
>>68496015

And that's exactly why many of them left. They did the damage and it was time to move on elsewhere. The Turkish government has a network of shitposters that go around the internet to defend the actions of their government. And more of this is becoming more clear since Turkey is shutting down independent news companies.

http://fair.org/home/reporting-or-not-the-ties-between-us-armed-syrian-rebels-and-al-qaedas-affiliate/

Great article here (even if sg already knows), some insights, it gets better and better at each paragraph :

>Reporting (or Not) the Ties Between US-Armed Syrian Rebels and Al Qaeda’s Affiliate
>A crucial problem in news media coverage of the Syrian civil war has been how to characterize the relationship between the so-called “moderate” opposition forces armed by the CIA, on one hand, and the Al Qaeda franchise Al Nusra Front (and its close ally Ahrar al Sham), on the other. But it is a politically sensitive issue for US policy, which seeks to overthrow Syria’s government without seeming to make common cause with the movement responsible for 9/11, and the system of news production has worked effectively to prevent the news media from reporting it fully and accurately.
>that exclusion “means that the operation has a better chance of receiving regional and international support.”

Assad cannot hold power forever. We need to ensure a democratic transition from power to an elected representative with fair elections, and a system of government where all power is not merely with the executive.
>>
>>68507928
You cannot throw out the Syrian government at a time like this. Sunni groups will grab the opportunity, and it will be another Libya.

When are people going to learn from history?

A fragile country like Syria where every demonstration can lead to a mass radical Sunni-uprising cannot change in one day.

Best is to leave the Syrian government in place and apply outside pressure for gradual reforms.

You cant just make Syria into a western system just like that!! Isnt it fucking obvious? Try for once to look outside your pampered Western point of view

Reminder that the Arab Spring started with good intentions. If only Assad enacted reforms in his governments so that genuine opposition could arise then we wouldn't be in the civil war that is present today.

I agree that Assad must remain in power for now, however it will affect long term stability if he remained in power for another twenty years. Reforms need to be enacted so that appropriate opposition is created for a more stable society.

Same goes for every Authoritarian country, particularly Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately they have a stranglehold over NATO due to their oil, money and geo-political position. However as the fracking industry in the USA develops, hopefully the US can lessen their dependence on them, and therefore their support. It will be interesting to see what Trump would do if he were to attain the presidency.

There is no doubt that radical extremists saw the Arab Spring later as an opportunity to further their agenda. Same goes for many revolutions, including the Bolsheviks in Russia. However the majority of the people that were on the streets of Damascus in 2011 desired genuine democratic reform. It's just too bad that Assad decided to fire upon the peaceful demonstrators rather than listen to his citizens.

Not an Iraqi style transition, that has obviously shown to be a failure. However it is short-sighted to believe that an Assad that is still ruling in 2040 is the best outcome for Syria.
>>
>>68508756
>started with good intentions
STARTED being the keyword.

You have to realise that certain Sunni groups with foreign backing were never going to be happy with whatever reforms Assad could come up with.
They wanted to just remove Syria as ally of Iran. And to that end the demonstrations by well-meaning Syrians were abused and turned into a civil war.

In the end I just feel bad for those people who had well-meant intentions for demonstrations for reforms in the very beginning.
An interview with an already integrated Dutch Syrian I posted yesterday already noted that silently, some Syrians regret ever starting the protests now that they have led to this.

I personally think that Syria cannot be democratic until Iran and Saudi Arabia somehow normalize relations. As long as gulf states hate Syria for being Iran's ally, and try to influence and instigate from gulf-backed Sunni mosques in Syria, I think that Alawites, Christians, Druze and others will be fucked in case of a democratically but largely Sunni (crypto-Wahhabist) party elected

The people with the good intentions were just a smoke screen.

However, it is true that Assad could have defused the situation easily if he had sniffed up the smoke screen instead of trying to blow it away.
>>
>>68509435

2040? How could anyone know anything about what's good for Syria then?

I think if Assad gets through this foreign invasion on his country he will be the best leader for the country afterwards, and he should stay as long as his people want him.

In a fair election he would stay in power btw.

It is very sad indeed that for the Assad government there is no other choice but to react harshly to demonstrations but again remember: its not the Western world.

A country torn between the spheres of influence of the Shi'a and Sunni world in increasing hostility to eachother, needs to crackdown upon protests because as we have seen in the Syrian War, protests WILL be abused to become Jihad war.

>>68509680
Nah, man, they were there. Some of them regret it now >>68509576
Its just that foreign backed-Wahhabists will grab ANY chance to revolt.
>>
>>68509576
A reasonable assessment. Syria has most certainly turned into a proxy war with Iran and Saudi Arabia most trying to create a Syrian government. Both countries have their hands dirty in this case.

Unfortunately, I just can't see a normalisation of relations in the future. It certainly can't happen while Ayatollah Khamani is alive, and probably won't happen while the Saudi Royal family is in power. The secular tensions from the sunni-shiite divide are just too great at the moment.

I am in no way advocating for a Syria that is under the Saudi's boot. However I believe that Assad cannot hold power for the amount of time that say, Mubarak did. I just can't a truly peaceful Syria with Assad remaining as a complete autocrat with no accountability to his name through democratic processes.

>>
>>68509756
>In a fair election he would stay in power btw.
Perhaps, but we have no evidence to suggest that currently. Particularly if an election was conducted in 2011 during the Arab Spring then certainly results would be interesting.

>>68509789
The democracy have to be modeled on the est. All I am advocating for is some sort of political reforms that bring about SOME accountability for a leader such as Assad, because I cannot see a truly peaceful Syria where all the decisions are decided by one man alone.

>>68509831
I don't understand, Australia has a separation of powers in the Legislature, Executive and Judiciary, as does most democracies.
>>
>>68510103
>Both countries have their hands dirty in this case.
Oh definitely. Iran is of course trying to keep its allied state when the Gulf wants to remove it.

>Unfortunately, I just can't see a normalisation of relations in the future.
Agreed. things seem to have gotten worse sadly lately

>I just can't a truly peaceful Syria with Assad remaining as a complete autocrat
I suppose not. Sadly I have to (in my opinion) conclude that while Sunni-Shi'a tensions run high, a democratic government in this Sunni majority country also isnt going to work for now.

Sometimes youd think a 2-state solution (a Sunni-state with gulf ties and a plural state with Iran ties) might work, but Assad would never agree to that, nor would the countries that dont want Iran to have allies (gulf, Israel and currently also USA)

Maybe the only solution is a Lebanon-style government, with government top positions required by law to be split among all religious groups?

Those results can certainly be scrutinised being in the middle of a civil war, particuarly when the populace is war-weary, possible corruption of the votes not withstanding. They do. The Syrian army spokesperson spoke of "special tactics" that were to be used in the vicinity of the ancient ruins. What these are no one knows (or if they even exist) but it's likely that it's something they keep in mind.

Don't forget, tourism was one of the most important industries to the Syrian economy. These ruins are of similar value to oil and gas installations to the Syrian economy.
>>
>>68517928
For PR purposes they need to. RuAF has orders not to bomb Palmyra Castle for instance.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fakhr-al-Din_al-Maani_Castle
>>
>>68517928
Why would they not? Syrian government always used these historic sites to generate tourism

For Syrians it is likely a source of pride about the antiquity of their land. Its not for nothing that they like to remind people that Aleppo and Damascus are very ancient cities

Tbqh this might even be a good thing. The Jordanians are apparently not helping the "moderates" anymore but if anything Israel is less likely to aid ISIS then the "moderate" Al-Qaeda groups it has been aiding.

Plus if ISIS takes over that area the SAA has an excuse to work on capturing it because the ceasefire wont apply
>>
>>68519449
Oh I agree, the more factions control small shreds of land, the less legitimate the "opposition" is.

Although FSA is already heavily mixed with Al-Nusra in Daraa, just like in Idlib. They lost their last shred of legitimacy when they teamed up with Al Qaeda. Though that probably suggests they had no legitimacy to begin with.

An old lady watching over the goats noticed me passing by, stopped and said crying "Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it. The world is changed, I feel it in the water, I feel it in the Earth, I smell it in the air." I knew what she was meaning, I smiled, while holding her hands, nodded my head and told her that tonight it will be cold, she should stay inside. She freeze, she realized why I was there and what I was doing. I just turned around and continued my path…It got dark quick! Only the moon watched over the desert dunes, you could even see the old ruins from there.
Everybody said they are legends, that I was insane. Just thinking at my fallen brothers from the /sg/ platoon, at that old lady, I stood up and screamed to the night sky “THIS IS FOR YOU GUYS”, and continued walking.
Every living being is asleep in this tranquility, only silence stretches over the land now…but he is not sleeping, he's awake… he has been for a while… I know he will come, it’s said that at the cover of the night he rises. Suddenly a loud noise was heard..
I looked to the sky and there he was flying through the night. Emotions overwhelmed me, I screamed: ”Palmyra when?”
He then noticed me, and his loud voice filled the dead silence of the night, it felt like 100 thunders breaking apart the sky and said to me: “IT IS TIME…TO PALMYRA we march tonight!!!”, and continued his journey. I started running after him, what a time to be living, what a time to witness BASHAR AL-ASSAD slaughter the isis demons that roam the earth and liberate Palmyra!

Thankfully, Khamenei and King Salman are both in poor health. Iran shows much better potential for reforms, especially with the recent election results, but the Assembly preemptively blocked the reformist Khomeini from running for Ayatollah, which would have been very likely and would have guaranteed a moderate and friendly Iran for the next decade at the very least.

King Salman's poor health is a bit more worrying because the next in line is basically an Arabic version of Joffrey from GoT, and is largely responsible for Saudi Arabia's decision to invade Yemen.

Imagine if we had /sag/ threads. That would be comfy as shit

The more you know and read about Saudi Arabia's economy and the inherent problems in it and the future projections of it in addition to the oil running out, water scarcity, population growth etc, it becomes clear that Saudi Arabia in 20 years will have to devote all of its resources just to keeping its economy afloat and not collapsing which is what its basically doing now on the low-key.

Iran is likely to continue in the reformist and moderate direction and keep growing economically. 20 years from now Iran will be to Saudi Arabia what the US is to Mexico. Iran will be economically, militarily and diplomatically the major player in the ME and the Saudis will eventually just start to play nice with Iran because they will realize they cant afford the cash needed to combat Iranian influence and that they would benefit more from Iranian investment and cooperation.

The US recognizes that Russia could have take the military campaign all the way to the end until the Syrian gov. retook the whole country but the Russians compromised a bit and did them a favor by semi-withdrawing. This gives the Syrian gov. a little more pressure to have any post-war reform be more then superficial even if Assad stays although this to some extent might be good because it will make the post-war Syrian gov. more legitimate in the eyes of the international community and will help with removing sanctions and rebuilding etc. The Russians have been hinting they could ramps things up again especially against ceasefire violators but the White House really does not want that. Kerry is probably in Moscow to essentially find out what the Russian's redlines are on the Syria peace negotiations in order for the US to consider whether its worth a peace deal on those terms. The US wants to get the best deal it can that the Russians and Syrians/Iranians will tolerate.

There seems to be a of confusion here regarding Palmyra

The major historical site of ancient Palmyra is located southwest of the city. Given the advances displayed here:

Its not unthinkable that they will take it today.

However the actual city Palmyra is another story.

The reporter is asked whether "the city of Palmyra" is taken, and not the ancient site.

Pic related is the city.

Yeah that sounds far more realistic.

The Syrian Arab Army has regained control of the historical part of the city of Palmyra according to a yrian brigadier general. Last evening, the SAA cut the two strategic highway in the vicinity of ancient Palmyra.

As reported by Sputnik, with reference to the statement by the Syrian brigadier general whose name is not given in the report, Syrian government troops has reconquered the historic part of the city of Palmyra.

"The Syrian army regained control over the historic city of Tadmur (Palmyra) using small arms," - said the agency. The general said to the news agency Sputnik that the city was taken without the support from the air.

Earlier today, Syrian SANA agency and the Iranian Fars news agency reported that the Syrian army with the support of its allies managed to cut the two strategically important roads linking Aleppo to Palmyra and located to the north of the city Qaryatayn.

FARS reported on the morning of March 23 that Syrian forces and their allies liberated the strategic area in the suburbs of Palmyra after a fierce battle with the militants of the Islamic State. Agency sources reported that the Syrian army and its allies suffered minimal losses, while about 30 people were killed among the militants.

The news agency SANA also reported that parts of the government army with air support was able to capture the mountain Al Hayyal, which dominates the south-western part of Palmyra. In addition, the military destroyed the fortified Islamic State positions in the western outskirts of the city.

Still i am skeptical that the SAA has suddenly entered the ancient city, being at its doorstop through the Qusoor mountains is plausible. If they have entered the city however, it means that ISIS defenses have been exhasuted due to the epic resistance in the outskirts and they simply ran out of fuel.

Technically ancient city is Palmyra, and modern city next to it is name Tadmur.
>>
>>68526786
ISIS may have opted to entrench themselves into the main city, which is where their supply caches are.

From what I've gathered, their communications and supply lines are compromised, and two local commanders have been killed already. ISIS is not in good shape.
