The most the appellate court can do is determine if the finding of the jury of 115 million is to much or too little. But based on the fact that Gawker violated a court order and violated privacy laws, they can't really diminish the warded amount extensively. First of all the burden is now on gawker to prove innocence, where as before the reasonable doubt was in their favor, it is now a default against gawker.
Second (in most states) you can't just appeal because you don't like the verdict. Something about the trial had to be unfair. After all, trials cost time and money, and 50% of people involved in court cases are not pleased with the outcomes. We aren't redoing every trial.

You have both a judge and jury verdict. A Judge can overrule a juries verdict if they believe the jury was incompetent or acted outside of the law, or if other mitigating factors have occurred. Most of the time the juries verdict stands. Thats why it goes to appeals.
In appeals an appellate judge can look at the findings of the court, and based on reason of law, potentially alter or change a verdict under mitigation if they find that the jury came to the wrong conclusion.
So Gawker will always have lost the court case.
What an appellate court can do, is lower the awarded amount. Since Hulkster sued for 100M and was awarded above that it could be diminished to the suit amount or a set threshold lower, but no less than that cap amount. That is to ensure that the juries verdict stands and 'justice' is served, as well as to validate the whole court proceedings.
The only court that could overturn everything is the Supreme Court and they wouldn't typically hear an appeal on a case like this dealing with privacy law coming from the defendant of the suit.
