Well yes. Flavor can be strong AND subtile. If you use spices, you're actually HIDING the flavor of your recipe, to taste the spice more than the actual food.
Using too much spices actually ruin your pallet and you can't feel flavor normally anymore. That's why there is no Indian famous chef, they fucked up their mouth by eating spicy food everyday.
Flavor should be gain for mixing ingredients, using cooking techniques and using the perfectly right amount of everything you need. Not throwing spices in the general direction of your food.
