I think it's not so supernatural or however you want to classify it.
These people who remember things differently to how they are now can be split into two categories:
1) The media based group who remember differently because that particular media *has* been edited, eg: Star Wars quotes, the Berenstein bears, Smokey the Bear etc. Colloquialisms are very similar not not quite, sometimes the difference is uncanny.
2) The geographical based group who just downright ignored geography to the extent that they actually pay attention to maps now that this has come up, and are shocked at their own ignorance, and try to blame it on some CERN time shift.

If, in reality A, NZ was physically above Aussieland, and in alternate reality B, it was south of Aussieland, and if you grew up in reality A but some crazy physical process fractured your existence over to reality B, you would have a memory of NZ with NO physical proof of it.
