Before the internet was common, it took years for fashion trends to make their way from cities into rural areas. Same with most music. Movies didn't have much of a delay (a few weeks to months) but for the most part you could take a trip back in time by going into areas of lower population density.

I used to be fit and shit as a kid but after around 2010 no one went outside anymore. It happened gradually but through my preteen-teenage years i had no social life outside of school and never went outside. Sometimes on weekends my neighbors would be playing with RC cars or something but everyone always eventually had to go here or there after an hour.
Every social occasion has a thick atmosphere of awkwardness now and everyone has hidden contempt for everyone else. I rarely "hang out" with anyone without it being eerily awkward and silent. In fact, I rarely "hang out" with anyone anymore compared to my childhood. It seems that asking someone to come over your house now has very inappropriate connotations, and can offend people. You can't even just "hang out" with anyone without any kind of entertainment, it's always movies or concerts or blah blah blah. I just want to chill and talk to someone without having to entertain them. In a society that's more open about taboo subjects than any society in history we're very closed to actual social interactions.

Think the mall was another victim of multiculturalism. Teens were one of the backbones of the mall economy. When gangs moved in, even if they weren't real gangs but just everyone hanging out with their own ethnic group or race, conflicts arose. The malls had to start placing restrictions on when teens could come into the mall. Different groups tried to show up each other and the mess scared off the regular customers while the spending power of the teens that remained tend to go down as immigrants had less money to spend.

late Gen Y arguably has far more in common with Gen Z, with the difference that at least they still had some ok cartoons growing up, since shit that came out in the early-mid 00's wasnt too bad, although it was the beginning of the end, since by then cable started to kill local TV. I guess it's more to do with early Gen Y getting to know the pre-internet and very early internet era. before social media, before viral videos, and before omnipresent online marketing. Also, the pre-cellphone days. back in the 90's and early 00's, the only people who had a cellphone were adults. It was a grownup thing. businessmen had them mostly, but maybe your dad had one because it was trendy, but used it no different than a house phone on the go. i was born in 91, and while I remember pagers being "cool" and all that, I didnt get my first phone till 2009. And it was a shitty prepaid flip phone. i didnt get a smartphone till like halfway through college. maybe '12 or so?
younger kids though came of age just in time to be swept up by the "everyone has to have a phone" trend. EVERYONE had a sidekick. And later an i-phone.

I don't buy that though. I've heard the same argument before but I've never understood it. Yes vidya and tv and internet is convenient and stimulating but that's because you're used to it. If you had a summer home or a cabin somewhere peaceful and you went there for an extended period of time you'd gradually relax and care less and less. They have their phone with them, get a notification from Facebook that there's a beer festival going on and ditch everything else.
