It's complex, I don't really have "an honest opinion" on them. I am very knowledgable about Korea and Korean culture, society, people. However my opinions are erratic and swing from one extreme to another, as they do with most issues. I can't really settle for one opinion on any issue. Koreans are obviously very hard-working people, their culture prioritizes "palli palli" (hurry hurry) but they have national idiosyncrasies, like their "uri" mentality. They're very nationalistic and their way of thinking is different from westerners. While being very proud, they are also very, very insecure about their national pride, similar to black nationalists who endlessly rant about the glorious inventions of black people. They are also excessively concerned with the image of Korea and Koreans in foreign countries and think the world revolves around them.
The society also feels very superficial. Both South Korea and North Korea feel like surface-level imitations of their respective mother coutries (Democratic 1950s US and Stalinist 1950s USSR) but below that surface there is still a very different indigenous culture that governs day to day life.
I also think Korean girls without plastic surgery look better than with. The natural Korean look turns me on more than the fake plastic look, but I get that people have different beauty standards and my opinion isn't the be all end all.
It criticized a lot now than I praised but all in all I think it's a pretty good country, South Korea does more good than North Korea does harm but they don't get as much credit for it and are rightfully angry at being overshadowed by those northerners in the US and Western media. (but that speaks more to the sickness within western media than it does to Korea)

It's still shit either way. Japan has some good cinema (musashi trilogy, every Kurosawa film) in their history at least and Korea has gore flicks and other pop culture flicks that are fun, but hardly anything memorable or significant. Even China has their martial arts cinema history although the recent state propaganda funded flicks like "Ip man" are absolute crap which leaves Korea with the weakest movie tradition of the 3 nations.
Japan's recent cinema history is crap though. If they have made any significant contributions to cinema in the past 10 years I am unaware of it.
