I started working for dot-com's in the mid 1990s, then Fortune 500 companies when the dot-com crash happened. In 2008 I went back to school to get my BSCS.

Why wouldn't someone get one? You're supposed to study three hours for every hour in class. So that's three years studying, one year of classes. You're going to have to spend those three years reading the exact same things any how, so why not get a degree in the process?
The reality is, I meet people who make these claims. They tell me they did the equivalent study. And yes, often they study the syntax of a particular language. Then I ask them theoretical questions about mu-recursive functions, out about A* search heuristics, or about self-balanced binary trees, and they don't know much of anything. They never bother to learn the underlying mathematical theoretical foundation of all of this.
Very few of the successes in the business don't go through college. The only ones I know of were ones who were so motivated, they started a business in college and it took off like a rocket ship (Microsoft, Facebook etc.)
There's a difference between dropping out of Harvard in sophomore/junior year because your business is exploding, and the situation of the typical NEET here. It's OK to skip school if you have ALREADY founded a billion dollar company.

Honestly, it's just getting into the program itself that's the problem. Once you're in, you're reasonably set for employment. The issue is that right now, so many big state unis are in a state of financial disrepair. They LOVE international students, because international students have to pay up front, and they have to pay 3 times as much.

A big issue with LabVIEW is that NI markets it to make it look like anyone can come off the street and program a complex application. Anything with more than one VI benefits tremendously from someone who has passed the certification exams for CLD or CLA.

Semantics, really? A PLC controls hardware. Programming a PLC that controls hardware is the closest you can get to programming the hardware. If my software fucks up, the hardware is liable to start leaking or catch on fire; understanding the physical hardware state is critical to not fucking up. I provide engineering requirements to the hardware design folks too which is another way to "program" hardware that is not really open to someone with pure CS experience. I program FPGAs as well with LabVIEW; it literally functions as a hardware description language.
Protip: There's a reason companies pay tens of thousands in licensing costs for LabVIEW instead of using free languages that hypothetically provide the same functionality.

I learned how to do my job in prison, not jail, actual fucking prison, and I learned to love it. I love taking apart my equipment, sharpening my blades, my clippers, so that I can do a professional job for my clients. It's insane how dedicated you have to be and also social and talkative, so most autists wouldn't survive, but I always do back to school cuts for free for my clients and I get to know them and I realized they're doing worse than I am even though they're educated and doing things which actually matter to our country

If it's any consolation, I did chemistry, too. I went for ChemE after the fact (easy if you can do math at all) and now i'm making loads of money. Pure chemistry won't get you much without PhD, but take it a step further (2 years more or less for a ChemE degree with a chemistry foundation as opposed to 4+ for a PhD) and it's not uncommon to pull 6 figures out of undergrad.
