For instance, there are 175 unbound delegates, and at least one has already said he'd vote Trump. If he was just a few away, it's very possible he'd win on the first ballot.
Failing that, it all comes down to party politics. If he's super close, it unlikely they'd deny him the nomination, but they'd probably force him to take the VP of their choice and agree to a more establishment party platform.
