It's to put pressure on Assad and the rebels to negotiate. Russia has a lot of influence in Damascus, but it doesn't control it.

It also created tension between rebels and groups like Nusrats, which may have been an aim, or is simply an added benefit.

There are many theories floating around right now, but since the campaign only cost ~$700mil and they were winning I don't see any other reason but a political one.
>>
>>67760576
Whats up with the bottom picture?
>>
>>67760786
Syrian opposition was bitching how they won't negotiate until we stop bombing them. Probably that was the move to calm them down.
Also, this operation costed us 33 billion rubles. Our military budget is several trillions of rubles. 1usd = 69 rubles

Hi there, I know /pol/ is all about Manichaeism but I did my studies about Yemen and I feel like I should share them with you, if anyone is interested in something else than "good Houthis against evil S.A»:

>Historical background:
Before 1990, South Yemen was a socialist country (the only on in the Middle-Est). After the unification, they felt buttfucked by the North and had to deal with it.
During 32 years, Saleh reigned and corrupted the country. Amongst other things he did, he tried to merge Zaidiyyah and Sunnism but another dickhead said "nope" and created the Houthis. At first it was no big deal but they grew bigger in the South after years of repression. Important point : Houthis are not related to Iranian Shiism, they are actually very close to Sunnism.
Fast forward 2011. Yemen goes thru a peaceful revolution process (compared to the rest of the Arab world) and within a year Saleh leaves. Mansour Hadi is chosen to drive the transition and, more or less, fails.
Houthis try to take over and eventually manage to capture Mansour Hadi. Meanwhile, Al Qaida (btw, their local leader is related to the founder of the Houthis, shows how close from Sunnism they actually are) starts to shit around too.
>Geopolitical situation:
The country is split in 3: Houthis + Pro Saleh VERSUS Al-Qaeda VERSUS loyal forces. Mansour Hadi fled to S.A. to get some help and managed to convince 10 country to join, all Sunni, to fuck with the south. Funny when you know that he’s from the south too, and likely to have ties with Zaidiyyah…
As you can see, at first religion wasn’t really a big deal (it is now). And if S.A., loyal forces and Al-Qaeda are working together is more that they all have the same enemy than because they are allies.
Add to this that Daesh arrived lately and you have a very complicated situation.
Those were my 2 cents. Hope it helps.
>>
>>67762781
the key word in all of this is 'claim'

they may have claimed sovereignty but whether that holds up or not is a different thing

its simmilar to me claiming my spot of land is its own sovereign country

i'm sure putin may have an issue with me starting my own country within his....

Putin always throws a bone to Obama even when Obama has fucked him over every change he gets.

In 2013, he saved Obama politically with the chemical weapon deal when Obama wanted to bomb Libya and had like 4% support.

In 2015, the Donbass rebels were on the offensive, the Ukrainian army was in shambles, and the DNR probably would have taken Kiev by now- but Putin forced them to sign a ceasefire.

The same thing is happening here. He's withdrawing so the US can actually fight ISIS and save face- the only way they can after fucking up Syria so badly.
>>
>>67762959
Isn't the Houthi-Saleh alliance pretty shakey? I've been seeing increasing reports in tension between the two factions. Taking into account also the history between Saleh's government and the Houthis.

It feels like when (or if) Hadi is removed from the picture, they are prone to turning on each other and creating a new dimension to the conflict.
>>

We investigated fitness, military rank and survival of facial phenotypes in large-scale warfare using 795 Finnish soldiers who fought in the Winter War (1939–1940). We measured facial width-to-height ratio—a trait known to predict aggressive behaviour in males—and assessed whether facial morphology could predict survival, lifetime reproductive success (LRS) and social status. We found no difference in survival along the phenotypic gradient, however, wider-faced individuals had greater LRS, but achieved a lower military rank.

It makes perfect sense. Putin wants good relations with the United States. Even though the US gov keeps rejecting him, he keeps trying to get on their good side. He's hoping the US leadership will be sane and rational, and realize they need Russia as a partner more than they want it as an enemy.

I also forgot to mention the Iran deal- which even Obama admitted Putin played a big role in implementing.

A fair share of FSA/NHC is under Muslim Brotherhood-control.

Friendly reminder:

Riad Mousa al-Asaad was the commander of the Free Syrian Army.

Riad al-Assad has made controversial statements such as suggesting that ethnic cleansing and suicide bombing are "an integral part of revolutionary action, of Free Syrian Army action."

This, a billion times

Bashar Assad is a good guy but he inherited a tremendously corrupt and hamfisted government body from his father. Even Syrians who support FSA say the same. Bashar brought desperately needed reform when he first took over, but the statesmen and businessmen left over from Assad Sr.'s era had too much control and eventually forced him to take a back seat.

>“The Peshmerga will have a significant role in the liberation of Mosul, but all sides need to reach an agreement on how to run the city after liberation,” Barzani told a joint press conference in Erbil with visiting British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond.

>Iraq's defense minister Khaled al-Obaidi previously told Rudaw that “the Mosul operation will take place no later than the first half of this year."

http://rudaw.net/english/kurdistan/170320166

already getting /comfy/ for massive Mosul operation in a few months

>Massive convoy of Syrian Army reinforcements leave Latakia for Palmyra

>The arrival of the Syrian Marines to Palmyra is likely going to swell the numbers of the government forces to approximately 5,000-5,500 military personnel, which should be enough soldiers to liberate the eastern countryside of Homs and the western countryside of Deir Ezzor from the ISIS terrorists.

https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/massive-convoy-syrian-army-reinforcements-leave-latakia-palmyra/

Fucking awesome. They are preparing to break through Palmyra and sweep the countryside into Deir Ez Zor. Things are going to accelerate a lot once Palmyra is retaken.

As for the declaration of a federal Syrian Kurdistan, I think it's getting hyped up to look like something more than it is. The initial announcement said the kurds were changing their system of governing from "canton self-administration" to "federal", which I think was the main intention with this, since a mere "declaration" doesn't change anything about what they can actually leverage militarily. Turkey may have changed the U.S.' position/level of support regarding kurds, but I think the kurds' approach towards SAA/Assad and their ambitions remain unchanged, and they seem to be keeping their neutrality/friendliness in that regard.
>>
>>67772399
My guess is that while the negotiations will go for unified, sovereign Syria, Kurdish autonomy will happen not long after the war is officially over.

>Syrian Army, Hezbollah overwhelm ISIS in west Palmyra: dozens killed

>Unlike the previous days, ISIS was first to strike this morning, targeting the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) front-line defenses with 5 VBIEDs (vehicle borne improvised explosive device), all of which were destroyed by the government forces before they could reach their intended destinations.

>Following ISIS’ failed assault, the Syrian Arab Army’s “Tiger Forces” – backed by the Desert Hawks Brigade and Hezbollah – carried out a powerful assault near Point 700, killing several enemy combatants while inching closer to the Qatari Royal Villa.

They dont have an actual ideology, only a bunch of anti-ideologies
They are what is left of the USSR aligned parties of the west
After the fall of USSR, leaderless they turned to a sad parody of a political movement
Having always told what to do are unable to take their own course, so they are just contradicting anything their former masters have deemed evil just before they fell
They are like robots that their software havent been updated for years in changing world, political zombies if you wish

Yes, the left has failed so completely in the west, that everybody forgot what it was all about. They had an agenda about social progress and economy, their main point was always economy and now they just argue about feelings. Liebknecht etc. would have killed themselves if they knew what their movement will become.

And it will never come back, all social progress is now made by the conservatives and they are actually better at it as long they don't go Merkel-mode.

not really comparable, the S-400 is a SAM complex that uses 3/4 different missiles to cover it's performance envelope. The medium range 9M96 seems offers similar range compared to the PAC2 Patriot missile. I guess nobody here can tell you more about this stuff, i bet more in depth information is classified. And even if it weren't, this stuff hasn't really been tested in combat between two parties that are on the same technological level, so who knows how it'll work out there...

What about all the sand US-led coalition bombed between 2014 and 2016 under the false pretense of fighting ISIS? Care to comment on that?

Can't you read it yourself? English knowledge should be enough to vaguely understand it.

And a hundred billion dollar pipeline through the most unstable region of the world that only gives you access to a single stagnant market isn't?

Literally no serious analyst is talking about the prospect of these pipelines, only some amateur geopolitical hacks and conspiretards on /pol/.

The real profit is in selling LNG to the Asian market where there is actual demand growth for decades to come and high prices. (which is why Qatar is the richest country in the world per capita)

>>67803516

Don't talk about shit you don't understand, Hans.

Multiple LNG terminals are already currently under construction in Europe, let alone all across Asia for LNG imports from USA and Qatar etc.

Meanwhile Russia can't even get financing, not even from China, to actually build their Siberian pipeline to China that they announced with great pomp and circumstance after a nearly a decade of negotiation and major concessions on price.

If Russia was really """"backing"""" a pipeline from Iran to Europe (which they would never do for obvious reasons), they would just transit the Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan or even the Caspain Sea if they couldn't get an agreement with Turkey or Azerbaijian/Georgia

A fucking 5 year old could figure out how to draw a line from the South Pars/North Dome gas field for either Iran or Qatar that doesn't go through Syria, seriously you're fucking retarded if you can't figure this out.
