Idealized. In fact most of the photos you're going to see from the 1950s were selected because photography and film was still relatively expensive. And focusing on the crappy parts of society wasn't cool yet.
My parents traveled extensively in the 1960s and 1970s. The shot a ton of 8mm movies. They were almost entirely "best of" kind of scenes because developing 8mm film rolls was still expensive. I even used their camera in the 1980s, and it cost a ton compared to VHS.
The 50s were the peak era for the USA, but a lot of it was naive flag waving. We now know better.
With our knowledge today it would be interesting to see what would happen if we went back to 1950s principles but used modern tech.

Houses were smaller back then and much less complex. Building codes are a good thing but they've become filled with "nice to have" rules that shouldn't be mandatory. There are rules for all kinds of things you would never think of like how many power outlets you must have on a kitchen island or in a hallway. Often these rules become obsolete but are kept in. I would say it's an economic when you get past vintage nostalgia. My grandparents were a butcher and a lunch lady, they had four kids a big house, two cars, and eventually a boat. Their parents were poor farmers from great depression era, who were lucky enough to be able to grow their own food. I don't have to idealize the 50s to realize many aspects of it that were better for the American people than the Modern Age they're living in now. Lower crime rates, divorces, tuition costs, and unemployment numbers. Better economic opportunities, social mobility and growth. The 50s for America was just perfect for them. They were one of the few countries after the War that didn't suffer horrific losses and belonged to tje even fewer exclusive countries who could drive the world economy with the products and services they could provide that no one else could compete with at the time.
America probably won't get that advantage ever again, especially when other countries, such as China, India, or from ASEAN, are looking to further increase the competition, apart from Europe, Japan, S. Korea, and the other developed nations that America is competing with now. The 50s weren't idealized. America really was a World Superpower during that time. You couldn't get the latest top of the line product that wasn't made from America. They were involved in all of it.
