Here's how it breaks down now kids.
1. Trump wins the requisite number of delegates outright, the Establishment shits itself and holds onto it's ass.
2. Cruz keeps a close enough second that he's able to force a brokered convention in which he will not be picked. Kasich is done he's served his purpose, he's only there as a fig leaf the establishment can pretend to like. He has zero charisma.
When this thing goes to the convention without a clear winner, the delegates (people picked by the party btw) won in states are more or less obligated to follow the voter's choices, meaning Trump will do well but still not achieve a 50% win.
Then it goes into double overtime. At this point, all rules are out the window. The delegates are no longer obligated to any State vote count. They can choose Count Chocula as the Republican nominee if they agree on it. Won't be Cruz, unlikely to be anyone who's ran so far. It will be someone they believe will soothe the plurality of the base.
This is what will happen if Trump doesn't get his number. They will never, ever, ever go with Cruz in a brokered convention, anyone who's paid attention to the last 4 years of politics understands this. Cruz has changed his position on a brokered convention this very week, meaning he's bargained to throw his support to Nominee X in exchange for a prime Senate position.

Basically everyone shows up to the convention and votes for the candidate they were voted to represent. The first round, they have to do this.
Once that produces the obvious result that no one has enough candidates, ANY DELEGATE CAN CHANGE THEIR VOTE TO ANY CANDIDATE THEY PLEASE. This means the establishment can pick whoever they want.
The establishment hates Trump, so a brokered convention means Trump will almost certainly lose. It will destroy the GOP since people will be super pissed off about it, but they'd rather see Trump fail than keep Hillary out of the White House.
