I get this feeling that, as things persist through generations, people begin to regard them the way they regard the ground under their feet.
A bridge is best when it is new, because it is inherently maintained through the process of being built. Once the bridge has been there for three generations, people for whom it was "always there" don't think about it like the decaying corpse that it is. "A stone can't rot away." Never mind that it is a machine, with fallible parts.
