Deputy Syrian Prime Minister, Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem is in India.

In a press conference held on Wednesday in New Delhi, al-Moallem said that he discussed with the Indian side the crisis in Syria and its repercussions on other states, with the two sides agreeing that terrorism knows neither country nor religion, and that it has spread to the states that have been supporting it for five years, adding “we’re beginning to see terrorism backfiring on the states that supported it like France and the United States, and yesterday Turkey, and before that Saudi Arabia.”

He asserted that the military cooperation between Syria and Russia to fight terrorism has achieved remarkable results, adding that the battle against terrorism is also Russia’s battle because there are thousands of Chechens fighting alongside ISIS in Syria.

Al-Moallem said that Recep Tayyip Erdogan considers himself to be the godfather of the Muslim Brotherhood and that he has dreams of restoring the Ottoman Empire in the region, which is why he supported terrorists to flock to Syria from 100 states, opening his borders to them and receiving money from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and other states to fund them.

He added that Erdogan did not calculate the results of that policy and the fact that terrorists will turn against their supporters, and that Erdogan’s empire-building ambitions are mere illusions.

The Minister asserted that only the Syrians will decide their future destiny without foreign interferences, and that Syria will be as the Syrians want it to be.

The conflict will shortly be moving into a dirty and extremely frustrating phase - DIPLOMACY&NEGOTIATION. In order to support the casual /SG/ user, QuickUpdate will provide reports directly from Vienna.

ussian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said on Wednesday “Moscow confirmed to Washington that Jaish al-Islam and Ahrar al-sham organizations can’t be on the list of the Syrian opposition because they are terrorists”.

An inter-Syrian meeting is due to be held between the Syrian government nad opposition in Geneva on 25 January as arranged by UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura’s.

“We think that the opposition delegations mustn’t be represented by terrorists, rather by the powers which call for a political settlement,” Russia Today quoted Gatilov as saying in Geneva, adding that the aforementioned terrorist organizations are propagandist of the military solution for the crisis in Syria.

http://www.almasdarnews.com/article/syrian-army-resumes-the-jordanian-border-offensive/

Earlier this morning, the Syrian Arab Army’s 5th Armored Division – in close coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF) and the Palestine Liberation Army (PLA) – resumed their imperative offensive inside the provincial capital of the Dara’a Governorate in order recapture the initiative and seize the Jamrak border-crossing into the Kingdom of Jordan.

The Syrian Arab Army’s 5th Armored Division and their allies began their assault around 7:30 A.M. (Damascus Time) when they stormed the Islamist rebel defenses near the Jamrak border-crossing’s fences in the Al-Maniahiyah Quarter of the Dara’a Al-Balad District.

Currently, the Syrian Armed Forces are attempting to seize the Free Syrian Army’s (FSA) remaining positions along the Jordanian border; however, this has been no easy task, as the Islamist rebels (specifically, Jabhat Al-Nusra) have reinforced the border-crossing in order to prevent conceding this site to the Syrian government.

http://www.almasdarnews.com/article/terrorist-interviewed-on-saudi-tv-video/

A video emerged last month with English translations on Iraq English of a heated debate between a jihadist and a Saudi TV host. The interview took place on Dubai-based Middle East Broadcasting Center.

What made this discussion peculiar is the openness of the jihadist in saying that he would kill the host with a knife or strangulation for not conforming to his views of Islam and not wanting to destroy the grave of Prophet Mohammad.

The jihadist stated he wanted to reign terror on Saudi Arabia to the shock of the host. This prompted the host to consistently ask the terrorist to perform his jihad in Afghanistan, Iraq or another foreign country. This is an example of Saudi Arabia indoctrinating its people with puritanical Wahhabi ideology, but attempting to export all its radical elements that threaten the Kingdom to go overseas and cause chaos.

http://www.almasdarnews.com/article/breaking-isis-captures-al-bayarat-in-west-palmyra/

>Kilomeme expansion phenomenon!!

Moments ago in the Homs Governorate’s eastern countryside, the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) imposed full control over the village of Al-Bayarat after a surprise assault on the Syrian Arab Army’s defenses near the ancient city of Palmyra (Tadmur).

Accoridng to a battlefield report from eastern Homs, ISIS launched another assault on Al-Bayarat, but this time under the cover of the dense fog that created visibility issues for the Syrian Arab Army’s 67th Brigade of the 18th Tank Division and the National Defense Forces (NDF).

The assault reportedly began at 5:30 A.M. (Damascus Time), when ISIS drove their armored vehicles through the dog and stormed the Syrian Armed Forces’ first line of defense at Al-Bayarat.

Facing the possibility of being overrun by ISIS, the Syrian Arab Army’s 67th Brigade and the National Defense Forces had no choice but to retreat west towards the road leading to the oil rich town of Jazal in northeast Homs.

In the last 72 hours, ISIS has recaptured both Al-Dawa and Al-Bayarat; these aforementioned villages were just captured by the Syrian Armed Forces two weeks.

As a result of this setback in the Palmyra countryside, the Syrian Armed Forces are no longer within 2km of the ancient city.

I think SAA don't want to push into Palmyra since their rear is still being threaten by the SF rebels while Russia air support can be limited due to the distance from Latakia. Russia is definitely working on the second airbase right now which is a lot closer. Once that airbase is operational, we can expect the opening of Syrian Southern Font very soon.
Palmyra and the desert area behind it is the place SAA can capture pretty quickly using advancing armors. After that, SAA can capture and clear Syrian - Iraq border. It is a low hanging fruit but it is hard to defense since ISIS will throw every thing they have on both sides to keep the border open. They don't want to lose men and materials doing the job for American coalition.

Kobane siege was pretty hardcore, especially if the turks are fucking with you aswell (remember that isis unit that came from the turkish border and killed a lot of kurds in kobane?)

I watched the american coalition present its progress report the other day. If i remember correctly their assessment is that ISIS reached the peak of it's offensive capabilities in may 2015. By july/august it was pretty much gone.

They have the capability, according tot he assessment, to make small raids, however, major offensives are no longer an option and they are entrenching their positions instead.

For this reason you will see the SAA, NDF and the Hezbollah adopt tactics which allow for the abandonment of small settlements when a raid occurs. It is likely that they have some capable shock/operator types still - but they are few and attrittion is the best way to deal with them. Sort of a statistical averages kind of game, where the dice are loaded in Assads favour over time.

I think that as the SAA advances the rebels will essentially collapse, as is being reported from various localities. I think the collapse will be more or less sudden as ammunition and resupply are cut. Combined with this the targetting of senior leadership ( 20 by last count ) of the various groupings and internal squabbles will account for some of the collapse.

Where there are multi-tribal/ethnicities involved, I question whether or not they will be able to undertake orders which seem to sacrifice one lot over another.

The danger of a sudden collapse scenario is that creates a vacuum into which the turks or the americans may attempt to drive, particularly where the SAA lines are still far away.

Thats my head on the block then.

Sounds about right. If a vacuum scenario occurs as you suspect, I would guess YPG will try to use it to merge their two territories. Not sure how Turkey will react since the YPG is U.S. assisted. Imagine if the Turks accidentally hit U.S. special forces with artillery, now that would be an epic shitstorm. U.S. would probably abandon Turkey to its fate of Syria 2.0

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/11/world/middleeast/neglect-may-do-what-isis-didnt-breach-iraqi-dam.html
>Neglect May Do What ISIS Didn’t: Breach Iraqi Dam

More than 16 months after Iraqi and Kurdish forces reclaimed Mosul Dam from Islamic State fighters, the structure faces a new threat: the danger that it may collapse because of insufficient maintenance, overwhelming major communities downstream with floodwaters.

In the worst-case scenario, according to State Department officials, an estimated 500,000 people could be killed while more than a million could be rendered homeless if the dam, Iraq’s largest, were to collapse in the spring, when the Tigris is swollen by rain and melting snow. The casualty toll and damage would be much less if Iraqi citizens received adequate warning, if the dam collapsed only partially or if it were breached in the summer or fall, when the water level is lower.

The period of greatest risk is from the end of February to mid-May, when the Tigris is at its highest and the pressure on the dam is the greatest.

The worst-case scenario is a total collapse in the spring for which no public education campaign has been carried out on where citizens should flee or what precautions they should take.

State Department officials said the danger would be the greatest in Mosul, where rushing water would be funneled in a powerful current along the Tigris through the center of the city. Residents might have as little as two hours’ notice that the dam to the north had given way, and the wall of water could be as high as 80 feet.

The Iraqi capital would have several days’ notice before the water reached there. But some areas in Baghdad near the Tigris, including the American Embassy compound and prominent Iraqi government buildings, could be flooded with water as high as 13 feet.

Aleppo

Army units established control over al-Sreib village and the surrounding farms in the eastern countryside of Aleppo province, sources on the ground told SANA on Thursday.

Fierce clashes with ISIS terrorists preceded this new advance, said the sources, noting that the clashes resulted in the death of most of the terrorists, while the rest fled to neighboring villages.

Subsequently, the army units reopened the road linking between Eishe village and the villages of Ein al-Bayda, al-Sreib and Nasrallah reaching to Aleppo-Raqqa highway after dismantling the mines and explosive devices planted earlier by ISIS members, according to the sources.

In the meantime, army units killed a number of terrorists in the neighborhoods of al-Shaar, al-Lairamoun, Bani Zaid, al-Sukkari, Karm al-Mayser, al-Ansari, Bab al-Hadid, al-Rashidin and al-Sheikh Saeed in Aleppo city, a military source said.

Gatherings of Jabhat al-Nusra-linked terrorists were targeted in Old Aleppo, with a number of them getting killed or wounded.

In the western countryside of the province, army units killed many terrorists, injured others and destroyed their arms during operations against their dens in al-Abawiyeh village, south of Khirbet Hazmar and al-Mansoura.

Army operations also targeted terrorists in Tal Rifaat, 35 km to the north of Aleppo city, and west of al-Nairab airport in the southeastern countryside of Aleppo.

So they find a "political" solution, the US sorts it out with the Saudis, Yurop does the talking and the Russians send a friendly invitation to every rebel group to get in line.
They will build a "national" government (mostly to Russian/Iran/Syrian conditions), Assad will step down in the process,
The opposition gets btfo of the coalition over time, situation back to normal within a couple years, Ba'ath boys continue to run Syria.

I guess you're a bit more delusional than your countrymen on this matter.

>The Survey of Social-Political Trends in Turkey, conducted every year in December by Kadir Has University, continues to reflect changes in public opinion in the country.

>Moreover, the survey results reveal that the rate of those who regard Turkey as being in danger of being divided has increased. In response to the question “Do you think Turkey is under the threat of being divided?” 54.2 of participants said “Yes.” In 2014, this rate was 46.2 percent. When this result is evaluated in terms of political party allegiance, regions and ethnic background, the perception that Turkey is in danger of being divided appears to be the common perception across Turkey.

I think that the SAA is forcing ISIS to amass their troops their, they would have less available troops when they're trying to defend the city against any possible offensive.

This.
Im glad they canceled their palmyra ossensive.
It was a desaster...desert and mountains combined with an impressive ISIS defensive was a damn meatgrinder...

Let them (SAA) take Al-Bab if they really want to, but they should focus more on FSA/Nusra before even thinking about retaking Palmyra.
ISIS will defend this city with "everything" they have...especially because they werent sucessful in overrunning Deir Ez Zor...

Yeah you're right unfortunately. If we see a Kikewood movie with Assad he'll be sucking on some FSA moderate POC transexual freedom fighter genitalia because he barrel bombed starving child on his birthday party.
