In theory Carson could help him secure the evangelical vote but I think you're underestimating how much the evangelical bloc disapproves of Trump.
He's a foul mouthed guy who brags about his extra marital affairs and doesn't really give that much effort to come across as a devout Christian other then saying that The Bible is his favorite book.
If it's between Trump and Hillary, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the evangelical bloc just sat this one out or voted for a third party.
I don't know that having Carson as a running mate is really enough to make up for their strong dislike of Trump. It might just make them lower their opinion of Carson.
