Read death of the liberal class. It is a good book. Hedges hates people like Trump alot but he understands where the vote comes from and sympathizes alot with their legit grievances and of course he condemns what has happened to them. People on the left hate Hedges alot, people on the right, of course, have no idea who he is.
After one of his speeches I read Dwight Macdonald's Masscult and Midcult (highly recommended) and thought it a criticism of communist and fascist attempts to subvert culture. But given the current state of affairs this book is much more a criticism of the diversity madness which is really just homogenizing the planet culturally to make the market have easier access to the work force.
Same goes with Popper's The Open Society and its enemies. Some 10 years ago you could still read it and derive criticism primarily towards the past. But seeing how Germany handles their refugee situation with all the amends the people and state have to make towards fundamentalist muslims who would like to see cultural victories of the past destroyed, it seems very important again and ,oddly, very confusing given that the supposed victims are the ones set on destroying liberties.

Socialism is a really broad term . . . and what do you mean by Fascism killing less/more people than Marxism? Are we talking about a comparison of the spanish revolution/Italian conquest of Africa/holocaust, or just all of WWII? I see nothing wrong.
But still, likening Trump to fascism or Nazis is a massive overreaction. His nationalism for example is nothing unique here. Even Hillary will call the US the greatest on earth in such a way that echos fascism. I hate the idea that history repeats itself. It never fucking does, and there are no parallels. Germany had just been obliterated in a world war, meanwhile Trump mentions mean truths about illegals and Islam, and pushes back on the pc delirium out there.
Anyway he seems that menacing if you follow him only though pop-media coverage.
