He was an ophthalmologist before he succeeded his father as President of Syria. Eased the authoritarianism of the state slightly, but failed to really implement any significant reform. His army, which contains all of Syria's ethnicities, fights against a Sunni-only opposition widely considered to be Saudi/Qatari/Turkish/Western proxies which wants to install a Sunni Islamist state - some in more extreme forms than others.
A secular strongman like him is the only thing that can keep Syria from becoming another ungovernable shitfest like Lebanon, or worse even, a Sunni Islamist state like Saudi Arabia.
Did he wanted economic independence from the westerners or what did he do for the U.S. Government to be against him?

Syria used to be a One Party state, according to the constitution in 1973, however nearing the turn of the century, the one party state became more inclusive. This still upset some people, especially Syrian opposition parties, who left.
Parliamentary action ensued and a new constitution was made in 2012, removing the one party system entirely. Funny thing is that the Ba'ath Socialist Party, the original one party, won more seats in this election than they have ever won in their one party state. But of course the West overlooked this fact, because as early as 2006-2008 the Unites States provided to their Embassy in Syria plans for a "democratic" revolution.
Despite Assad being an evil, child killing dictator, the Syrian people generally support him and his party more than the opposition forces. Again, the West in on full shill control.
US is still in a ridiculous cold war mentality that Assad, an ally of Russia, must therefore be the enemy. This fact is why Assad is portrayed as an evil dictator despite most human right violations are committed by the FSA, ISIS, and T*rkroaches.
