If you buy a fun online, it cannot be shipped to your home but must be sent to a licensed dealer who must perform a background check. If you go to a gun show, most of the sellers are licensed dealers. Any time they sell a firearm, they must do a background check.
Only private sellers have the option to not do a background check.
