They burned the Qing Dynasty to the ground. Ever since Deng Xiaping, they've been aware of the negative effects of the Cultural Revolution, and are slowly rebuilding. I think they're moving slowly so no one actually notices the removal of much of the communist imagery from the government, and the reintroduction of traditionalism.

Falun gong is basically chinese scientology. Its founder is Chinese radical Larry (look it up, the cultists believe he can vibrate through walls). There were hundreds of cults like them but falun gong is the most successful.
