When I visited England I was literally shitting myself one day, and went into an indian restaurant to use their toilet out of desperation. What I saw scarred me for life, a literal hole in the middle of a room, all covered in shit in it's surroundings.
I was supposed to release my bowels in that thing... I was so utterly shocked my urge to shit suddenly came to a halt, I wasn't able to do so. The awe and shock of the situation was so great my body refused to give in, I just stumbled out of that God forsaken place, the need was all but gone and replaced by a feeling of utter disgust, I must have walked 6 blocks with nothing on my mind but a terrible thought of what I had just witnessed until I was able to reach a proper toilet.
My bodily functions literally stopped after witnessing such mayhem of basic sanitary conditions, I was unable to think of anything besides that hole... When I was finally able to properly take a shit, I was so scarred by that traumatizing scene, I couldn't help myself and just paid ten quid to the bartender that allowed me to go in (even though he didn't ask for money) I was so thankful I could once again feel like a human being..
To this day, I've never felt again the satisfaction of paying that money for something so basic as taking a shit, because only because of that relief, I could once again be proud of existing as a human being.
My country may not be great, but God damn it, at least we've evolved beyond the stone age.
I welcomed that toilet as a long lost friend.

What is even more disgusting than shitting in the streets is that Indians literally do not use toilet paper.
There usually is a bucket filled with water next to the toilet, and in order to clean your ass you use your left hand in combination with the water from the bucket. This is why it is rude to greet someone with the left hand and why you shouldn't use it when shopping groceries in India.
