Well, this particular protest is fucking stupid. Police shot a scumbag who beat up his girlfriend, then messed with the paramedics trying to take care of her, and nobody has any real facts about exactly how it turned into a shooting.
But yeah, if they honestly want better policing, they should be keeping race out of it. As soon as accusations of systemic racism come up, all rationality goes out the window. A slogan like "black lives matter" prevents any meaningful discussion from happening, because there's this really nasty accusation of thinking that black lives don't matter, and as soon as you disagree with anything they claim or demand, you're confirming, in their minds, that you think that black lives don't matter.
There's a real problem with black people in America believing paranoid conspiracy theories about racism, and progressives encouraging them. So there are conspiracy theories about how law enforcement is just a series of racist attacks on the black community.

If they stopped fussing about race, stopped trying to maintain a distinct culture, and engaged in honest, calm dialogue about how to get better outcomes in their interactions with law enforcement, they could make some progress.

There's lots of situations where the gun is appropriate as a first choice. You don't want to try and taser a guy in a leather jacket and have him shank you. But we're talking about prisoner handling in this case. You know what the prisoner's wearing. You know he's not armed. His hands are bound. Pulling the gun after losing the taser might have been appropriate, shooting the prisoner if he was on his feet and running might have been appropriate, but firing it with the prisoner still on the ground was an error.
This cop clearly got confused after he lost his taser. His plan was to use the taser. Then the taser was gone. He was going to point something and pull the trigger to deal with this prisoner. He was being kicked. His adrenaline was going. He couldn't not deal with the prisoner. Where was the taser? Did the prisoner have it? He pointed with what he had and pulled the trigger, and oh fuck.
It's a big fuck-up, but it's the kind of fuck-up that people are going to make sometimes. If you want to prevent this kind of event, you want to look at procedures and equipment, not focus on the moral badness of this man or the police in general.

You can't keep people from mistaking you for a criminal, or falsely accusing you. If you're part of a visible minority that commits a majority of crime, you have a much higher probability of being mistaken for a criminal that you have a superficial resemblance to. There doesn't need to be any racism involved, you simply physically resemble more criminals, and you can't do anything about that.
What's within your control is to only deal calmly and rationally with the police. Speak to them respectfully and reasonably (if you judge it in your interest to speak to them at all -- don't be so quick to buy into the paranoid, "never talk to the police" lawyer shilling, police are often reasonable and misunderstandings can be cleared up with a minimum of inconvenience just by talking them through the truth), allow them to arrest you without attempted flight or resistance, and work within the confines of the law to clear your name.

Whether they're honest cops or up to something, being non-compliant and argumentative won't improve your situation. In the former case, you're missing an opportunity to appeal to their reason. In the latter case, you're giving them ammunition to justify whatever they're trying to get away with.
