I think this has a lot to do with it. The political spectrum can be summed up as the conservatives were the ones pushing the liberals in the locker in highschool. So the conservatives grow up wanting to keep this status quo that benefits them where the liberals want to see that guy burn no matter what, but won't admit to it.
I'd say your average American liberal is way smarter than you average American conserative. However, because they're smarter they seem to fall for what I call "associate traps" or "issue bundling" where they agree with something stupid on Topic A because someone who's smart about Topic B said something about it, them being "smart" too must mean they're automatically right.
It's hard to explain, maybe an example would help? I have friend who was never really into politics. Atheist since I've known him, more anarchist, apathetic, computer programmer. Well he and his then girlfriend grew up and started paying attention to the world more and seemed to immediately just go for every SJW type issue. I watched their facebook activities and noticed the decline. It started out with them talking to other atheists (I'm an atheist too by the way, but not a liberal per say) who were the tumblr stereotypes. My friend seemed to just get the idea from the other friend. Started sharing feminist shit on Facebook.
I kept fighting with them and they were confused because they knew I was an atheist but I wasn't jumping on the same bandwagons. It sort of redpilled him in a way. The gf went full feminist and he had to break up with too. She got physically abusive.
Point is, it wasn't the college professors that got my friends into stupid issues, it was my friends other friends.
