I recently read an article that talked about Trayvon Martin being a victim of institutionalized racism because the situations were set up perfectly for Zimmerman to benefit from the stand your ground law.
Although many people miss the point that Zimmerman waved the stand your ground hearing so he could get a trail by jury. Zimmermans legal team then used the traditional self defense laws as their legal defense.
I would also argue that the stand your ground laws can benefit black people as well, so I don't think it's an example of institutionalized racism.
I do think Zimmerman was right to shoot Martin, because he was getting assaulted and could have reasonably feared for his life or bodily harm, which then gives him the right to use deadly force in self defense.
That situation doesn't change just because of someones skin color. If you reasonably fear for your life or bodily harm, you can use deadly force to defend yourself.
People also argue about the legal system having a lot of institutionalized racism. This is because many blacks who are charged with a crime don't always have a lot of money, which puts them at a disadvantage compared to the typical white guy who can afford a lawyer.
