The thing is, the opposition also considers their side to be the truth. So if 2 people enter a conversation with these beliefs, then nothing will be accomplished. They must be swayed by pure logic and reason, not insults and degradation.
I've found that the best way to sow the seeds of independent thought is to begin with their philosophy. Discussing Kant's "On History" seems to be the most effective because he makes a very good case for the absolute freedom of expression. Best of all is "On The Opposition Bewteen Morality And Politics With Respect To Perpetual Peace" because it clearly illustrates the pitfalls of idealism and the need of morality to be tempered by politics.
